Depth and GPS recommendation?
Hey,
We bought an '81 CD22 this winter, to replace our Columbia 26, and I'm happy to have such a great owners association and bulletin board here as a resource.
I'm looking forward to putting her in the water in a week or so, but I think it might be worth replacing the fathometer while I have her in the driveway. The boat currently has a surface-mounted Navman fish-finder type deal on the bulkhead, and the clear plastic over the LCD screen is cracked, so moisture is back there, etc. I'm told it works, but I'm not in love with it.
The boat has no GPS. I'm in less of a hurry to put GPS on the boat, but I wonder if I should install one of the combo plotter/depth units while I'm at it.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations with the combo units? Any good ideas where to mount one of these on a 22, where it won't stick out/catch lines/be a pain in the back/generally look tacked on?
Thanks
Nate

Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
I just installed a Garmin 541s on my CD27. I purchased a Garmin flush mount kit and a friend installed the unit in the cabin bulkhead next to the compass. Looks great and takes up about as much room as the depthsounder we replaced. Garmin supplies you with a template and instructions. You can get by with a skill saw and a sander, but a Dremel tool is handy for trimming the corners. We had to make two cuts: one for the bulkhead and one for the liner. It took a few hours, but it looks good. It does not interfere with the compass either. In a few days we will launch and install the transducer.

Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
Is the transducer a glue-inside type? Is this an external antenna model?
Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
Glue in type transducer. Self contained antenna. Here is a link to the transducer specs:

And here is a link to the transducer installation guide:

Did you even take any pictures? We are considering the 546s for our CD22. Thanks, Boby

Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
I ended up installing a Standard Horizon CP190i (no fishfinder), and a separate Raymarine fathometer.
The Standard Horizon was about the same price as the Garmin, but the screen is almost twice as big. (I don't understand why Garmin is using half of the front of their instrument for buttons.)
I installed separate instruments because the cost was the same as the single GPS/Fishfinder option, and I didn't like the idea of losing both GPS and depth at the same time. I can navigate more comfortably with one or the other. But with neither, it's a little sketchy getting into tighter spots, or finding a decent anchorage.
The install was quick and easy, in the port bulkhead, next to the companionway. I'll make a shallow teak box to cover the back of the instruments sometime. All the wiring passes directly into the electrical compartment inside the cabin.
By the way, although the CP190i says it will require a $150 external antenna if you flush mount it, this turns out to be a lie. Hamilton Marine assured me it works fine with the internal antenna, and my experience has confirmed this.

Compass Safe Distance?
I like the Garmin units but I think that instalation might have a problem.
Check your owners manual. The Garmin 541S should not be mounted within 30 inches of your compass.
See page 10 of the online manual:

My guess is the radio is also a bit close to the compass.

Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
Holy Crap Man I love this installation My Standard Horizon DS-45 has given up the ghost and I now have a 4 1/2" hole in the port bulkhead. Either the 441S or the 541S flush mount kit will fix the issue! YES Thank you for the pics
