1980 Cape Dory 30 Cutter For Sale

Post by shanksauce »

I bought my CD30 in April of 2009 and lived aboard in Boston up until this last May of 2011. I left Boston for bereavement and have since relocated twice due to financial problems. I am looking to sell my boat as-is, at well below what I bought it for and invested in it.

The good stuff:
- New standing rigging in 2010
- New cushions and covers
- Rewiring of lights and marine electronics, new battery charger
- Original documents from the original owner, title, and survey from 2009.
- No hull blistering or hull soft spots, except for a small, non-structurally critical void in the keel (likely an air bubble).
- Self-tacking jib works great (like having two main sheets)
- Sails: spinnaker, main, 150 genoa, yankee, and staysail are in good shape but may need to be washed. I'm not even sure the spinnaker was ever used.
- New toilet and plumbing 2009
- New Garmin chart plotter and active external GPS antenna 2009
- Raymarine autopilot
- New bilge plumbing and pump 2010
- Pressure water pump installed for galley sink 2010

The bad stuff:

- The Volvo MD7A in my CD30 is likely at the end of its life cycle, much like all the others that are either toast or on their way to being toast. I understand that the prospect of re-powering a boat is almost like buying a new boat in itself, which is why I've decided to list at the price given here. However not all hope is lost. The main issue with my engine was that it ran hot due to the "atherosclerosis" of the old exhaust manifold's raw water cooling channels. A new/old manifold off another MD7A, some liquid gasket goo, four new bolts, and no more than two beers should finish the job. I can't verify the condition of the raw water cooling passages in the engine block itself, but based on the condition of the manifold, I would wager it is at best adequate. Keep in mind the engine ran reliably even with the now defunct manifold for three seasons!

- The banjo adapter that screws into the fuel pump (that connects the fuel hose from the tank) needs to be replaced. There is a shop up the road in Everett, MA that has these components and some great diesel mechanics. I never got around to fixing it before I left. They helped me 90% of the way - I just needed to actually order (and pay for) the right part, screw it back into the fuel pump, and reconnect the fuel hose.

- Per the 2009 survey, there may be a slight soft spot topsides near the hatch, but I never confirmed this nor noticed it myself.

- The original pressurized alcohol stove and oven (which I still have if you want it) needed to be removed to meet insurance requirements. The alcohol fuel tank itself was disposed of since it leaked and was not repairable.

- Some of the portlights were re-bedded with butyl rubber and mounted directly to the interior fiberglass. Structurally, this is good since mounting them to the interior wood accumulated moisture and was rotting it in some places. The bad part is that only two portlights were replaced in the main salon on the starboard side.

- In the process of re-bedding the starboard portlights, The veneer trim on the starboard side of the cabin was torn off in an attempt to replace it with red cedar panels. I never finished the project, so cosmetically, things are incomplete.

- No current survey. However I have all my original documentation, title, etc and would be willing to work with an interested buyer on this.

- No functioning engine likely means no sea trial can be performed, that is, unless the engine is reassembled or an outboard is attached.

Final remarks:

This is, despite the list above, an awesome, sturdy, and trustworthy little sailboat. She always got me where I wanted to go, and safely got me out of trouble. In either light or heavy weather, I never experienced any major hangups and could always comfortably make 6.5 knots.

Please send me any questions or concerns you may have. The boat will be sold to you as-is. All sales are final. The boat is currently laid up on land in the Boston area and I would be happy to arrange a time for you to look at it.

Thanks,
Ben
