Im gettin a new UK Passagemaker II "M Pentex Laminate". Currently I have an old 150% genoa. Thinking of getting a 135%. I sail mostly in LI sound. Any suggestions, should i go down to a 135? Also, has anyone sailed with these sails? Is the new material worth it? better than the old dacron?
Thanks

New Genoa for CD25, 135 or 150?

Do you have a roller furler or hank-on setup? for a furler, I would opt for the 135. I had a 135 (20 years old) and just replaced it with a brand new 135. I thought about going with a 150 but nixed the idea. It seemed to me that I would be spending alot of time trying to sail partially furled which is always a compromise. With the 135 I usually sail with it all the way unfurled. When the wind really pipes up I can "reef" it and it seems to perform well when the wind is up. I wouldn't want to feel compelled to sail with it partially furled that often, though. FOr those really light wind days I was not convinced that the 150 wuld propel the boat much better than the 135 anyway.
As far as material is concerned I went with a miter cut dacron, very traditional. I don't see where you would get much greater performance on a CD with the laminates, because the boat already has a high D/L, the lighter weight aloft wouldn't seem to be a big factor. But this is a very personal decision and it would be intersting to hear from others who like the laminates.

Thanks Bill for the helpful advice.
I have a furler, and i've decided to go with a 143, a bit of a compromise between the 150 and 135. But im still not certain which sail to get... To be honest, in addition to performance, i like the look of the mylar, and the fact that it is translucent, easier to see oncoming boats when i am close-hauled. Also, supposedly, I will heal less with this sail, and therefore sail more efficeintly. But perhaps the traditional dacron would be better, it would certainly last longer. By the way, the quote for the 143 mylar (after some bargaining) was $1350 including instillation. Does that seem reasonable to you? I look forward to your (and anyone else's) reply.
