Intrepid 9 meter

Post by sdcarey »

I am restoring a 1980 intrepid 9 meter. I am interested to talk to anyone who has any info on the subject. My present problem is I need to replace the gasket material around the portholes. Does anyone know who made them and where i might find such material. The hatches are Bomar but there is no name on the portholes that I can see. I would also love to see some detail photos of other I9M's. Thanks I look forward to hearing from someone soon!

portlights

Post by trapper »

The shape of the portlights on the inrepid is the same as my CD25D. I assume you have the same bronze portlights as other cape dories. They are made by spartan marine. Good luck with your projet.

I believe the Intrepid 9M has squarish ports, probably plastic or painted stainless and not the bronze oval ports found on many of the other CD models. Unfortunately, I don't know the manufacturer, but it's not Spartan Marine.

Are they plastic or painted metal? Try the web sites of the following manufacturers to see if any of their portlights look like yours. If you find them, you should be able to get gaskets from them that fit, otherwise you'll have to purchase gasket material and cut them to fit yourself.
Hope this helps,
Cathy

Cast aluminum ports

Post by Michael Abramson »

I have an Intrepid 9M. The ports are cast aluminum, and are rectangular as Cathy says. I removed all of mine, knocked out all the glass, media blasted them, primed and repainted in white instead of the original black, and replaced the glass and the seals. They also have a trim ring in cast ally on the outside. However, I do not remember a seating gasket on the inside, so I can not help on that point. I think I just used a caulk for that job.

The main port seals, which are a round section of rubber with a splice to make them continuous, were available from Spartan, but it was many years ago when I did the job and that may no longer be true. You could probably make them yourself with a bulk supply of 1/2" or maybe 9/16" sponge rubber rope seal, using an angle cut to glue the ends into a loop.

Thanks everyone for your input. Micheal is correct about the ports. I did not remove my ports. I manage to get the outside trim ring off two off them but it was so difficult that I decided it would do more harm then good to take them off. So I sanded them to bare aluminum in place, ( horrible job!) and repainted them with interlux using a metal etching primer. Mine are now light gray. The gasket i am talking about is the rubber gasket on the inside that creates the seal when the windows are dogged down, not the seal between the porthole trim and the hull. I think that sponge rubber rope seal sounds like what I am looking for. I will follow that lead. i checked Sparten but didn't have any luck. I would love to see pictures of you boat if you still have it. Preferably details of the deck and cock pit. Thanks. Susie

Michael mentioned using 1/2 or 9/16" sponge rubber seals. When I replaced the rubber gaskets on our Bomar hatches, I purchased the 9/16" gasket material from Bomar.

There's a possibility that your ports were manufactured by Gebo but I really don't know. Their aluminum portlights are availalbe with anodized aluminum "silver", white or black finish. Visit their web site at:

It probably wouldn't hurt to contact the folks at Robinhood Marine Center (it is owned and run by the same folks that owned and ran Cape Dory) and ask if they remember the manufacturer or brand of portlights Cape Dory used on the Intrepid 9M.

In addition to the ones I mentioned in my earlier post, here are the web sites for a few other aluminum portlight manufacturers.

Thanks Cathy for all your research. Bomar does have the 9/16th rubber seal. I am going to call them today. I think I may need 1/2". Your websites have been very helpful. I really appreciate it.
