Fun on a rainy New England Day -> Cape Dory 34D

Post by bobdugan »

About a month ago, some Cape Dory friends helped me deliver Emerald, the new to us, 1988 Pacific Seacraft 34 from Old Saybrook, CT to Salem, MA... about 150 nm.

The trip was fast (we ended up motoring the whole way... no wind :(), and the company was great: Jeff Giles, John Ring, and Dick Barthel.

I learned a lot about Long Island Sound and the Cape Cod canal... which we squeaked through at slack tide just as the current was starting to turn against us (thanks again for the advice on that John).

Anyway I woke up in my berth off watch just as the boat was arriving at the mooring to the sound of snarky laughter... and as I ascended the companionway stairs I realized why... I thought I had purchased a Pacific Seacraft 34, but in reality I purchased a Cape Dory 34D! Actually it was a relief. I really like Cape Dories!

That's the sharpest looking CD34D ever!

It was a great trip with a great crew. Thanks for having me a long for the ride!

Sailing involves the courage to cherish adventure and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.

She handles beautifully!

As a post-script: Fellow 25D owner Jeff Giles and I helped Bob test Emerald's performance in "high" winds.

As it turned out, some of those breezes measured 34 knots (apparent). She performed beautifully!

Jeff shot some video of our little shakedown sail, but I don't know if he's posted it yet.

Funny story

That is a funny story....and knowing Dick Barthel as I do, I completely believe it! There are few boats I love as much as Cape Dorys...(Shannon is one) but Pacific Seacrafts are at the top of my list. Enjoy her and keep posting funny stories.

Joe... that was a very fun sail and it was great to have a fellow 25D'er on the boat. A couple of days later Jeff sent me this funny video trailer:

Bob,

You do not want to know what my wife would say if I even thought about leaving my boots there!

Careful...
