Mercury outboard

Post by JBA »

Hello all,
I have a 2 stroke/5hp mercury outboard with a long shaft. It has a fitting that is not explained in the manual.
On the bottom of the flat wing just aft of the oil level opening there is a screw. It barely shows in the diagrams in the manual but it is definitly there. Does anyone know what it is. I do not want to turn the screw until I know what it is.
Thanks,
JBA

JBA... you got me going so I went out to the garage to take a look at my ol Merc (1990 2 stroke, 5hp)... Are you taking about the screw securing the water pickup (pg6A-2; part #'s 24 and 25)??? The other bolt that I can see underneath is part of the gear housing, I think...
Does this help at all?? hank

The screw is likely part of a retainer for the shift linkage. Don't take that one out!
