Typhoon hatch cover

I am maintaining a old Typhoon for a sailing club. The hatch boards do not reach up to the hatch cover leaving an opening about up to 2 inches. Is this the way it was made? Is there some reason for this condition? thanks

My Typhoon, 1979 weekender, came with a one piece hatch board, and it fits fairly close to the sliding cover. I haven't seen other Typhoons to compare but I think mine is the original hatch board.

my ty is a '76 and it has three hatch boards which fit up close to the companionway cover. there is a teak trim piece on the top edge of the cover and a larger piece of teak under the cover. these are attached together by screws going through the top teak, through the cover and into the inside teak. attached to the inside teak is a sytainless steel angle with a hole drilled in the end. when you slide the cover closed, this passes through a piece of stainless with a slot in it that is let into the top hatchboard. you can then place a padlock through the hole in the ss angle which locks up the cabin.

The one piece hatchboard is not original. As far as I know CD used three solid pieces of 3/4 teak to make the boards and they should come up to within 1/2 inch of the hatch. I have seen about four or five typhoons each with this set up.
