Freewheeling problems with CD27

Post by B. Pulling »

After five years as owners of a Typhoon, we bought a 1977 CD27 at the end of last season. Today was our second sail. The freewheeling noise, with the gear shift in neutral, was quite loud and carried substantial vibration. I initially thought the engine itself had somehow come on. The engine is a Yanmar 8 hp. Question: Do I put the gear into reverse while under sail? Should you be able to hear freewheeling and feel the vibration through your feet on the cockpit floor, when the gears are in neutral? Does that signify anything? Thanks for any help that anyone can give....bp/

I always sail with shifter in reverse,so that shaft isn't spinning. There will be a little noise from the shaft if in neutral but not loud. It should not vibrate.I also have a CD 27 1977 YSB8

This has been discussed before and it seems the majority leave it in gear and in reverse. If you are really into it, you can mark the shaft so that you can put the prop in a vertical position while sailing (slight reduction in drag). This also reduces wear on the cutless bearing, the transmission and your nerves.

Mark, thanks for your comments. I did go back and read through the older messages on this board and I will take the advice of the majority of CD owners, including you. Reverse it is...thanks again....bp/

Steve, thanks for your advice on this. Since you have the same model and year boat as I do, can you tell me if you have roller furling and whether the boat sails well with that? And have you had any topside leakage, from rain, etc., around the toerails toward the bow? If so, what have you done to remedy? Thanks for your help....bp/
