Bronze Hardware - Removal of the "Green"
Does anyone know of a product which will easily remove the "green" buildup on the scupper drains, stemhead, etc.
I have tried Brasso to no avail. This product only put a small dent in the the corrosion.

ABI Bronze Cleaner
Bronze cleaner from ABI industries works quite well. Can be a messy job so primarily for exterior bronze only. Can be ordered from Boat U.S., West Marine, Defender Industries. Does not require heavy scrubbing. It seems to be acid based.Ron Polihnowski wrote: Does anyone know of a product which will easily remove the "green" buildup on the scupper drains, stemhead, etc.

Which reminds me of a story (fairly off topic). Once we took some people from one of my wife's social groups out on our boat. The husband of one of the women came on board and immediately bent over to inspect the latch on the lazarette. Turns out he was Bob Birk, the "B" in ABI, and had made the latch.John wrote: Bronze cleaner from ABI industries works quite well.
A very interesting guy - got started by building a boat in Taiwan, sailing it to California and selling it for a profit, and repeating the process. Eventually started making the hardware too, and that's what he does now.
Later that afternoon a young couple broke a pontoon on a Hobie Cat in a four foot chop in San Francisco Bay, and Bob and I pulled them out and towed the boat into the San Francisco Yacht Club. So it was a pretty interesting day.

Re: ABI Bronze Cleaner
John, I have been everywhere looking for the product. No one seems to know what I am talking about. Is the product sold under some generic name? The only product for this purpose seems to be a 3M product called Marine "one step" Metal Restorer and Polish? The ABI product you told me about seems to be the one I really need as I have very heavy oxidation on the bronze components.
Thanks
Ron

Ron, sorry to take so long to respond as I haven't had time to review this board lately. I have several bottles yet so I haven't tried to buy any for quite awhile. Re: ABI Bronze Cleaner
I called ABI and they have discontinued the Bronze Systems Cleaner. They now reccommend Brasso.

Try making a paste of table salt and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Just let your bronze parts soak in the paste for a while, a little elbow grease and a mildly abrasive scouring pad help to speed up the process. Then try the Brasso or Flitz for a bright polished finish.
