Rope Clutches for CD27

Post by Warren Kaplan »

I have been gradually modifying my CD27 for single handed sailing. I want to lead the main halyard and jiffy reefing lines back to a shared self tailing winch mounted on the starboard coachroof so that all can be handled from the cockpit. Sailing Magazine has a nice article about Harken, Lewmar, Spinlock, and some other clutches. Before I start this project I'd be grateful for any and all opinions about which brand is best. Also, do these clutches come with all the hardware necessary for installation? What about sheaves. Any tricks for installation would be appreciated.

I ran the main/jib halyards aft on my CD26 several years ago and have been very pleased with the performance. I used Schaefer turning blocks (double) and a Splinlock rope clutch (double line). When drilling through the balsa cored cabin top I recommend the following. Step 1. drill through the deck and balsa core but NOT into the headliner Step 2. put a bent nail in the drill chuck and remove about a 1" diameter area of the balsa core beneath each hole drilled in step 1. Step 3. fill the cavities created with epoxy resin..step 4 re-drill each hole all the way through the cabin top/epoxy/headliner Step 5...mount the hardware with bedding compound and appropriate size fasteners...
Since then, I intalled a Harken roller furler and now use the rope clutch for the main halyard and topping lift since the jib is now always hoisted and cleated at the mast...my boat is a joy to singlehand!

you might want to consider a backing block underneath as part of Kurt's step #4.
