Bronze turnbuckles

Post by Drammend »

I suspect that I am just not being very resourceful, but I am struggling to find an open-body bronze turnbuckle to match the original shroud turnbuckles on my 1987 Typhoon Senior. I just bought the boat last fall, and it had one chromed closed-body turnbuckle to go with the 3 original bronze open-bodied turnbuckles. I would love to find some original to match, but a new bronze match would be okay. Any ideas?

If you don't find one-

I think I have all the open bronze turnbuckles from a CD28. Off hand - I am not sure what different sizes they are - probably bigger than you need. But one of the smaller ones may fit. I will dig them out and check this weekend. If one fits - you are welcome to it.

Hayn Enterprises makes find bronze hardware, including turnbuckles. They are available in plain bronze or chrome-plated bronze....

...and you can order them from outfits like West Marine, Defender, Pyacht.com. You can also check with your local rigger.

Suncor makes both stainless steel and bronze turnbuckles. The bronze ones, like the Hayn turnbuckles, come in plain bronze or chrome-plated.....

...and you can get them from places like Jamestown Distributors, etc., (again, check with your rigger to see what he sells).

Hope this helps,
Cathy

Try Alexander Roberts, who sell bronze turnbuckles. They have no web site but are easy and friendly to work with via phone:
949-250-4571 (west coast).

I have been looking at bronze hardware for the rerigging of my boat. I have talked to a number of riggers. All expressed concern about bronze turnbuckles made in asia, where many are now made. I was told by one respected New England rigging shop that they are now starting to see turnbuckle failures with well known manufacturers which they carry (though he named a few specific ones I don't want to repeat the names since my info is second hand) and they are considering no longer selling them. Apparently they are now made in asia as well.

All gave very high marks to Wilmex (very expensive) and sta-loc turnbuckles (also pretty expensive). Did not hear any comments on Hayn though I read a post on the "Spar Talk" forum where Brion Toss commented favorably on them a while back. This is one of those area where it pays to know what you are buying--name brand or not. I am still looking so if you come up with some definitive information I would be very interested. Thanks.
