will white gelcoat hide tan epoxy repair?

Post by Jerry Albright »

I have repaired cabin sole soft spot with epoxy resin.I will sand and fair the repair tommorow, but am left with a tan colored epoxy repair.I bought a coloring additive to add to the resin but mfgr. only recommended 1oz. additive to 1 qt. epoxy.
I plan on gelcoating the cabin sole to hide the repair, will white geloat hide the darker color? Thanks in advance for any advise.

I have never tried white gelcoat over an epoxy repair, but I would guess you wouldn't have any problem as long as you have adequate pigment and put several thin layers down. I have overcoated an epoxy repair with tan gelcoat (nonskid) with good results. The West system epoxy web site has an excellent article on methods for preparing the epoxy repair to receive gelcoat and color matching.
