Have photo of Rocna or Manson Supreme on CD31?
Can anyone post (or send me) a photo of of a 15 KG Rocna on a CD31? And a shot of a 15 KG Manson Supreme on a CD 31?
If the 30 and/or the 32 have the same exact bowsprit, I would be interested in photos from them too.
Thanks,
Dean

I'm sure you can buy one from Hamilton and if you absolutely cannot make it work (which I doubt) then return it.....

Manson 44
Sorry Dean, I couldn't resist posting this. One Manson 44 in the trunk of my Chevy Aveo.
After attending the Seven Seas webinar on anchoring, we decided to go with the bigger anchor.

Dean,
I'm not sure if the bowsprit on the 32 is the same, but I am pretty sure the roller/pin assembly is the same. I bought a Manson Supreme to use in hard clay bottoms. My main anchor is a Bruce which I keep on the sprit ready to deploy most of the time, so I don't have pix of the Manson on the sprit. I keep the Manson in a locker and deploy it when needed. I was not happy with the way the manson rode (no pun intended) on the sprit. It does not fit inside the pin, and it wobbles and bangs around a lot in a seaway. However, the design of the anchor gives you lots of choices to secure it with bungees. And it's worth its weight in gold in hard clay.

Dean,
As always your welcome to borrow either my 25 pound Manson Supreme or my 33 Pound Rocna to test fit. I think my Rocna is here at the house but I'd need to check as it could still be on the boat.
Personally I'd suggest the Manson over the Rocna unless you can find the Rocna for less money. There have been some very credible reports that the steel used in the Chinese built Rocna's is below the original spec called for by the designer and this is concerning.
I have a real issue with the new Rocna's being built in China, vs. the Manson in NZ, yet the Rocna still costing $200.00 +/- more... The cost to build an anchor in NZ DWARFS the cost to build one in China yet they still charge more....

I bought my 33lb Rocna from West Marine and was little PO'd when I found out it was made in China. WM wasn't real upfront about it. The price at WM was a lot lower than they had been and with store delivery eliminating shipping cost it was, if I'm remembering correctly about the same price as the Manson. The famous or infamous (depending on your point of view) "Craig" from Rocna actually PM'd me after I started a thread on the topic on sailnet with an explanation of how they actually improved the design and manufacturing process by going to China. I don't recall the details but to a non-engineer it sounded OK. Bottom line I kept the anchor and I'm happy with it.
Better to find humility before humility finds you.
A Manson 35 on my CD33
These aren't the best shots, but they show my 35 lb Manson on our CD33 with the Spartan bowroller. It's a fine fit, with no mods needed. I regret I don't have a closer shot of the anchor on the roller at the moment.
I really like the anchor, though I've not taken it out of the Chesapeake. I use it with 30 ft of 5/16" chain and 270 feet of brait on the Bay.

Being made in China is a drag (no pun intended), but Manson is a knockoff company. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong) Manson simply made a few unnecessary changes in the Rocna shank and took a ride on Rocna's research and development. I suppose the Chinese Rocnas ought to cost less; if they do come down I may buy another, if I'm convinced that the metalwork is hasn't deteriorated.Maine Sail wrote:Dean,

No, it doesnt go through the hole, rather after the anchor is all the way up the pin slides in front of the anchor holding it in place. Its a perfect fit. It sits in the roller far better then the bruce or CQR I have used. Though I suspect the next size down rocna you are considering wont be as snug, but really as long as you keep your chain taught it shouldnt matter.Dean Abramson wrote:Russell, how does your anchor interface with the pin? The only word we have that Manson knocked off Rocnas design is via Rocnas very obnoxious online marketing. I take anything Craig Smith says with huge grains of salt, remember his goal is to get you to buy their anchor and Manson is his obvious competitor. Buy what anchor works for you, let the companies and courts worry about that other stuff.SurryMark wrote:

Given reputation, I wouldnt be suprised if suddenly Craig Smith shows up and starts posting in this thread... I hope our board admins would ban him on sight.

Rocna STRONGLY states that you should not use the hole in the shank with restraining pins or bars as waves hitting the anchor could cause enough movement to bend the pins.Dean Abramson wrote:Russell, how does your anchor interface with the pin? Does the pin go through the hole on the Rocna?
Jim, thanks for posting the photos. What keeps your anchor from rocking back and forth athwartship?
I was a bit disappointed to discover that my new anchor was "Made in China." I hadn't expected it. Time will tell.
