Had a minor mishap yesterday evening which resulted in our losing the forward half of Feather's bowsprint. Would most appreciate anyone's effort to send me the overall length, width @ fwd end, and roller cutout dimensions.
Also any words of wisdom that might help in the removal, fabrication and reinstallation appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sorry about the mishap. But these things do happen. Lion's Paw is a 1983 CD 28. The bowsprit overall length is 44 1/4 inches. The width at the forward end is 9 3/16. There is a gradual taper from the point it leaves the deck until the tip. The roller cutout is 3 1/2 inches deep and 3 1/8 inches wide. Be sure to get a roller before you make this cutout because there is a variation in roller size. The cutout is set in from the starboard edge 1 3/4 inches. The center of the shaft through the roller is set back 1 1/2 inches from the forward edge. You'll need a bronze or stainless pin for this. Obviously drilling the hole for the pin straight will be a priority. Or you could use the casting from Spartan. That doesn't need the pin because the roller is part of it, you just make a cutout. Pricey though! I hate to admit it, but it was easy to measure this because she's still on the hard (it's been a busy year). IMHO the only way to go is to make the new one up of teak strips glued together with epoxy. You will probably want to thru bolt them as the original was. Your biggest challenge may be in finding teak bungs to fill the bolt holes. On Lion's Paw they're 1 1/8 inch diameter. A friend and I just bought a bung cutter for this size and it cost $40.

Re: Bowsprint Dimensions for CD28 Needed
Chris,
I recently replaced the bowsprit on my CD30. I fabricated it from teak strips glued together. I also made it thicker, longer (5') and wider (13") than origional. It looks similar to the CD31 bowsprit. I haven't photographed it yet, but will try to e-mail you a photo in the next week. I also did all of the work with the mast standing. I will get my folder out and send you an e-mail with some details. Feel free to call or e-mail any questions.

Re: Bowsprint Dimensions for CD28 Needed
I replaced my bowsprit last year with one I made of teak strips. If you have access to a bisquit planer it will make it a lot stronger. Bisquits are small wafers of wood that are glued horizontally between the strips of wood. I have seen ones done without bisquits split when they are in the sun. I also made it about 6-8" longer. Mostly because the teak boards I used were that long and I didn't see the sense in cutting it shorter. I can take measurements off the old one if you want.Good luck

Bisquits, dowels, etc. are used for quick aligning of parts, not to increase the strength. The glue is stronger than the wood if used properly. By using bisquits, etc., you actually reduce the strength of the joint because the area of the joint is reduced (by the bisquit).
By the way, did you use teak bisquits?
