Overheating 28 Trawler

Post by Frank »

Just had the coling system serviced. Had an overheating problem 3200 RPM's and on. Was told the TAMD40B has a heat exchanger boot problem.
They replaced the boot, coolant and serviced the cooling system. Just got off the phone, the boat is ready but it still overheats. Their reason is the boat is too fast at the higher RPM's. The salt water pick-up is under the gally sink and that area could be out of the water or there could be a void (bubble) formed and the engine can't pick up water. Need to move the salt water pick up back in the engine room.

HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND ARE ENGINE COOLANT THRU HULLS IN THE GALLEY. We have hull #19. HELP!!!

Frank,
My 28' cruiser is a later model with the raw water intake about 2 feet forward of the cabin door. While that may be the problem, my volvo mechanic didn't think so. He said that the heat exchanger boot of the TAMD40 can easily be hooked up wrong so that only half of the water flow occurs. So check the hookup. Heat exchangers do have to be cleaned of salt corrosion (either by boiling it out or sonically cleaning it) every 3-5 years. I now have a heat problem on my Tamd41A above 3000 RPM and it is being sonically cleaned. I will let you know the results.

Re: PROBLEM SOLVED

Just got the boat back from Pleasure Cove Marina (Bodkin Creek at the mouth of the Patapsco river, Baltimore). They did a wonderful job of solving the overheating problem. Clogged Heat Exchanger, about 60% to 75%. Yes there were bubbles in the raw water strainer but the heat Exchanger was the problem. 3300 RPM and heat is at 160 degrees.

Thanks guys
