cape dory 27 mainsail down haul
My Cape Dory 27 does not have a main sheet track it just has a block and tackle main sheet at the end of the boom by the lazerett. I was wondering if any body has any suggestions regarding better boom control, such as a down haul system?

J.
I have given CD27 boom control some thought since acquiring mine in '98.
My CD27 too has a block and tackle main sheet system at the end of the boom. I find that it works well. A prior owner installed a Harken traveler which is a nice upgrade to consider that gives you some boom control options. I'm not sure if all 27s had a traveler out of the factory although I know some CDs were delivered with padeyes as opposed to travelers.
What is a main sheet track?
As far as a downhaul system is concerned, my CD has no provision for this. The gooseneck is fixed. Luff tension would have to be adjusted with the main halyard and/or a cunningham.
If you're thinking about mid-boom sheeting, I don't think it is feasible on the 27 without some uncomfortable compromises. Cabintop traveler is out of the question, just have a look at the proportions. The sheet would be attached to the boom only about 1/3 of the way back. Therefore, you'd have to put a traveler on the bridge deck. As I've said in prior posts on this subject I am not sure that gives you any real upgrade.
Always interested in other ideas, comments, etc.

If you mean a boom vang, I rigged one on my CD-27 but rarely use it(except in reverse as a preventer) as the weight of the boom and Doyle stack pack holds the boom down when off the wind.J. On the other hand, I found that I used the traveller a lot but disliked the stops, which always jammed and required pliers to adjust. I replaced the stock track with a Harken track and ball-bearing car, which has built-in sheaves for rigging an inhaul-outhaul tackle. I use a two speed sheet system (3-part or 6-part) and like the whole system much better than the factory setup.

The mainsheet rig that I believe you have is know as a Crosby (or alternately a three part Crosby) rig. While is its true that you can't increase/decrease the curve in the main as you could with a traveler, the Crosby is more forgiving in "puffs."
On our CD27 I found that any course forward of a beam reach was fine with the Crosby. I added a boom vang (4-part block & tackle) to minimize "gull winging" when the boom was wrung out beyond the beam reach. Spartan Marine has the hardware and the mounting instructions for the installation.
Hope this helps,
