Bedding Deck Hardware With Butyl Tape

Post by Maine Sail »

Gary M. had asked that I post this link here.

For those interested in trying butyl tape, as opposed to "Satan's glue/5200" this article will give you a brief primer on how to use it effectively.

Thanks for posting this.

I discovered Butyl on another online forum (Sailfar.net, I think).

It's terrific stuff--and can be bought at RV stores for very little money.

These details are helpful--I've been winging it.

RV store butyl & structural/architectural quality butyl are not one in the same. I learned this after comparing many, many brands and samples over about a 6-7 month period when trying to decide which product to source.. While RV stuff is still ok the stuff I sourced is the actual product used by builders 30 years ago and is significantly better product this I know lasts well into the 30 year time frame. Hard to find and track down but I did manage to find it, source it and order it.

Wow!

Uh-oh!

I didn't know there was any difference between the $7.50-a-roll butyl tape I got at the local RV store and the "Bed-It" butyl tape you have found.

Still, even at the higher price, the marine-grade stuff would still be MUCH better to work with than either of the 3M products.

Does this mean I have to re-bed the stuff I've already bedded with RV stuff?

Recommendations for Bedding Thru-Hull Hardware?

Post by Jim Evans »

Maine Sail,

Great link - I found it very informative. What compound do you suggest for bedding thru-hull hardware below the water line such as seacocks?

No! But it just may not last as long. BTW many of the rolls from RV stores are only 20-30 feet long mine are 50' so even at the $14.95 price it is not that much more. If I had been buying this stuff last year I could have sold it for just $12.95 but butyl/rubber has gone up in price a lot in the last year. I am making very little on this as I want to just make it available. Any money I do make, which is little, goes into my "How To" web site.
