Looking for comments on transporting a CD 1800 miles

Post by Ed Burger »

I'm looking at buying a CD28 and transporting it from it's present location in Texas (on a lake near Dallas) to Annapolis, MD. The boat does not have a craddle and I'm not committed to buying this boat (other than my wife thinks I should be committed - mentally).

I've owned a CD22, 25 and a 28 (I'm looking to maximize on those "boat owner's happiest days" the expensive way) and they have all been in either Long Island Sound or Barrnegat Bay, NJ. Anyway I've never transported a boat before, other than when I bought the CD28 from the factory in 1981.

Any advice or experiences on transporting a boat this size?

Is this too costly venture to really consider.

I always enjoy visiting this site.

I would forget the 28 and look at a CD30 Ketch that is for sale sitting over at Bert Jabins. You can probably pull it up on Yacht-World. Or call Al Jackowitz at Yacht-Net in Annapolis. I have seen the boat. It is well equipped and needs minimal work and it can be bought right, probably for 25K. I sailed a CD30 Ketch for 6 years. It was probably my favorite of the sailboats I have owned, including a Pearson 365 and a CD36. Bob Pence

Hi Ed,

We hired a boat transport company to transport our CD28 from St. Petersburg, Florida to the northern Chesapeake. It was fairly easy for us, and cost about $1,500. We waited until the transport company had a boat going down, and an empty truck coming back. I would do it again. The transport company coordinated with marinas on both sides, and we did not see the boat off in Florida.

However, the transport company did have several red-tape type hassles with marina and boat lift in Florida that we had to work out over the phone in a crisis. If we do this again, I will be on both ends in person with documents etc...

Depending on the overland route, the trucking company may have to get a few permits for the CD28 (certain toll booths etc..).

Kind regards and we hope to see you on the bay,

David Wade

Bob:
How intrusive is the mizzen mast on a CD30 Ketch. With the cockpit not that large, it seems that it would really cut it down. However, I have never seen a CD30 Ketch.

Ed,
Have you checked for available CD28s in your area? There is one posted (6/6/00) on this board in Harve de Grace. CDs (28s and other possibilities)are always popping up in the Annapolis/Chesapeake area. Unless this is THE BOAT I would keep looking in the area. A long transport like you mention is always a risk -and potential nightmare... not to mention the expense.
Good luck,
bill

CD30 Ketch

Ed,

The mizzen mast in a plus, not a minus. Search the files under ketch, I have a previous thread on the pros & cons of ketch vs cutter.

I owned a CD27 and had the boat moved from Florida to Texas. It was a lot of problems and very expensive. My advice is to try and find something in your area!

I don't consider this outrageous at all. These are quite trailerable boats. If you should want to sail in different areas, you can have a trailer built for the boat, and take it wherever you want. I bought my CD-30 in FL, and trailered it home (NM). I haul her pretty fair distances as a matter of course, and plan on taking her to several other cruising areas in the next few years. She "goes upwind at 55" quite well. This option gives you a lot of flexibility.
