Mast sheave corrosion-stuck HELP

Post by tom foley »

The previous owner of my CD25 did not believe in cleaning or maintenance. The sheaves at the top of the mast are stuck. I have tried to free them with penetrating oil and hitting the frame with a hammer to induce vibration and allow the penetrating oil to work. I have tried to pry them with a small screw driver; all to no avail. Will I have to resort to external blocks ? All suggestions welcome.

This discussion is predicated on the fact your mast is unstepped. The sheaves are removeable. First remove the masthead assembly, once done remove the sheaves in question by pushing or using a nail punch, the sheave will come right out. Based on your inspection of the sheave condition, replace or free it up. As far as replacements are concerned
you don't need to go with ball bearing sheaves but use thge halyard high-load sheaves. Replace the masthead fitting and rerun your halyards then step the mast.

If the mast is already stepped... try to get some use from a dock crane or 'cherry picker' not a job that would lend itself to bosuns chair if you can avoid it. A case of beer at most yards will get you acess to a crane.

Hope this helps.

Re: It's rust, binding the sheaves.....

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

Tom,
When you finally do get the sheaves out, you will see that they are seperated by a thin piece of common steel plate. On Hanalei, the plate had rusted, and the rust scored the sides of the aluminium sheaves causing them to bind. I sanded the sides of the sheaves smooth, sanded the rust off of the plate divider, lathered everything with bicycle grease and reassembled. The sail now falls down the track, and the only thing keeping it from going all the way down is that $%^ #$%^* sail slide gate (addressed else where on the board)!

Hope this helps....
