using exterior house paint for bottoms in fresh water

Post by nick friedman »

I have owned a CD typhoon for the last seven years, and up till
now have been keeping the boat in salt water. I am now moving
the boat to fresh water, and am wondering what to use for bottom
paint. The folks at Hamilton Marine(Portland Maine) advised me that
I could avoid the expense of anti-fouling paint, by simply using
regular old exterior enamel house paint in a fresh water environment.
Can anybody shed a little light on this situation, for I am painting
my bottom this week and am feeling a little hesitant to go with
sherwin williams? Thanks and good sailing.

Hmmm!

I have been involved in the marine environment for my entire life. I am a boatbuilder by trade and have run large shipyards. I have my doubts about this. First, exterior housepaint will not last in any submerged environment. Second, unless the paint contains an additive such as copper or TBTO ( which has been banned for marine use by the EPA) it will not deter marine organisms. Ask the power plant supervisors who have to send divers to scrub the insides of the intake pipes periodically. I would suggest using the same antifouling paint you used in saltwater. Also barnacles do not grow in freshwater. Zebra mussels do. Check out http://oet.net for an alternative antifouling solution.
