Does anyone have experience or knowledge of the Old Saybrook CT boat launch ramp? I think it is a state run ramp. I am trailering my CD27 from SC to the woodenboat show in Mystic CT (23-25 June). I need about 6' of water at the ramp to float the boat from the trailer. I can get the trailer very deep as long as the ramp goes way out. Are there any better ramps nearby?
Are there any CD activities going on in that area (Mystic, Newport, Block Island, etc) during late June/ early July. I would love to get together with other CD owners and compare notes. There aren't many CD's on Lake Hartwell, SC.

Paul;
On your first point, try to get to Mystic/Noank area. I can put you in touch with my Marina to sling the boat in the water. Wherever you go IMHO slinging in is the best and most uncomplicated way. It should cost you less than $100. I can't speak for the Saybrook launch site
but most won't support 6' unless you have a very looong tongue extension. If you want check out the State of Connecticut web site under Department of Environmental Protection as they may have details.
On your second point,please look on this site for the CD Rendevous on or about July 9th. Plus OPSAIL 2000 takes place on July 12th in New London.

Paul,
I don't know about the ramp, but the Northeast Fleet of the CDSOA, Inc. is holding their <a href="http://www.toolworks.com/cdsoa/NErendez ... dezvous from July 7-9 at Millstone Point Harbor, Niantic Bay which is a daysail from the Essex/Old Saybrook area. If you stick around until the following week, OpSail 2000 CT will take place on Niantic Bay and the Thames River, New London July 12-15.
Here's an article about the Baldwin Bridge State Boat Launch and Fishing Pier. It doesn't provide ramp depths, but there's contact info.

Re: Old Saybrook boat ramp, CT
I don't know about the boat ramps near Mystic, but I just have to ask you this question. A boat ramp is usually just that. Not much else around. When my yard stepped the mast on my CD27 it was quite a job. I'd be interested in learning how you propose to step the mast on the CD27 without a crane or travelift or some other equipment? We had a discussion about that a few months back on these boards, but still its something to think about. I assume you've done it before under these circumstances . Mast is 38.5 feet.

Re: Old Saybrook boat ramp, CT, mast
My wife and I have stepped our mast several times at launch ramps. I designed a jin-pole about 17' long which is secured vertically just in front of where the mast goes. It is used to lift the mast into position using a cable winch. It takes between 2-3 hours to step the mast and launch the boat. I owe some others on this site some detailed info on my mast raising system and trailer design. If you are interested in particulars, I'd be happy to add you to the list of recipients. (This assumes that I will some day complete the drawings/photos. So much water to cruise....so little time)
BTW. I use a cable between the trailer and truck to lower the trailer into the water. As long as the ramp is long enough, I can get the trailer deep enough to launch. The biggest problem I have encountered is that some ramps stop after 25' or so.
