I installed a Autohelm 4000+ in our CD31 cutter rig last spring(97). I
mounted the flux-gate compass under the galley, there is a pullout panel and that put the compass close to the center line and miminized the effect of heeling. You may want to try looking at mounting the flux-gate on either the port or starbard side where the water tanks are,the 31 had them on each side. We had no problem with moisture or water reaching the compass since this was floorboard level.

We have a CD30 1984 vintage and we installed a Autohelm 6000 BELOW DECK linear drive pilot. Our fluxgate is located next to the port side water tank. Just remove the screws for the setee plywood base and remove it. You will find plenty of protected high and dry space for mounting the fluxgate. Ours was installed several years ago and has performed flawlessly. Don't forget it's location and inadvertantly introduce magnetic influences in the storage area behind the setee back.
