My 1982 CD-33, hull #73 "Bandolera" has, like all Cape Dorys, an oval shaped bronze name plate located at the top of the companionway entrance.. The hull # is listed there, as well as a drawing of the half hull model of our boats. I thought it was bronze, but it is plastic!!! I would like to have an identical one made, but this time of real bronze. Does anyone know who can do this, is this possible? Has anybody done this before? Would appreciate any info regarding this. Thanks.

I made pewter ones for my boat by using the plastic one as a model. I used plaster of paris to make the form. Pewter can be melted down on a stove by just melting down some figurines. Bronze doesn't melt until 1800F, so you will have to have it cast by a foundry if you want bronze (same for brass).

There are persons in the CD NE Fleet working with a bronze casting company to get bronze name plates made for our Cape Dory's. Design and details are still be worked out. Details will be forth-comming.

We also discovered that the bronze plaque was actually plastic, by trying to polish it with brasso. Well, the brass paint came right off!
This past winter, I cleaned that whole plastic plaque, then washed it in alcohol, and then spent a few hours applying gold leaf to the raised areas of the plaque. In hind-sight, perhpas a bronze leaf would have been more appropriate. But regardless, this technique works very well, is extremely satisfyinng to look at, will not corrode (whereas bronze leaf may???). Casting a sand mold of the plastic plaque then having bronze poured will be a very expensive proposition. Certainly far more expensive than the gold leaf process I used.

getting a new bronze name plate made. He needs a drawing to work
from, so I have asked a architect friend to work one up on his computer. As soon as I have the drawing I will send it to Bristol

my hands by rendevous time (July 7).

Maybe he could cast one for a CD 36 too? Parfait seems to be missing her plaque and her half hull model. I guess owners get attached to some parts more than others.
