Looking for CD40

Post by Kevin Kaldenbach »

We are looking to move up. Does anyone know where there might be a CD40 for sale? Our pockets are not deep but we do have them. Since we are on the subject please give us all opinions you have on the CD40.

Thanks, I am trying to look under every stone. I know there were only 16 built but who knows, someone may have been tossing around the idea of selling theirs. Is it safe to assume all three of the 45's are in pristine condition and happy where they are at?

Kevin:

I assume you checked Yachtworld.com but if not, there are three listed, CLICK HERE.

I think the above is the correct link but not sure. I am not computer literate.

All three are out of the country - 2 in Trinidad & Tobago; 1 in Guatemala.

Good luck :!:

I think the two Intrepids are the same boat and have been listed as long as I have been sailing. Does anyone know if Intrepid 40's were good boats. I know of the other two 40's mentioned so far. Nothing against them, who know I might buy one of them, I just want to know all options.

My wife and I moved onto our CD31 last year with plans for both of us to go cruising. She really likes her job here in Corpus so the thinking now is for me to go cruising and for her to join me form time to time. Instead of buying a house I got a harebrained idea to buy a larger boat to live on and cruise the CD31.

Intrepid 40's

Post by Chuck Conklin »

Yes Intrepid 40's are a Great boat. I have owned one for 20 years and it is still in great condition and for sale because of my health (70 years old and not getting any younger).

It would be a great substitute for a CD 40.

If the 40 is too steep, ya got no chance with the 45's. There is only three. The two I know of are pretty well maintained and wouldn't go cheap. Does it need to be a Cape Dory? There are a lot boats on the market for reasonable $$$'s but you need to look at models where more than just a few were made. Ever consider a Whitby 42? I think it would make a nice live-aboard.

There were two 40 foot Cape Dorys listed last year. Both for under 100000 dollars and is more in my price range. Out of the two boats one owner took it off of the market for the time being but said when he decides to list it he would call me first. The second was bought by a friend of the brokers for 54000 dollars. I have a hunch that this boat will be back on the market soon.

I know where four out of the 16 CD40s are and their status, Out of the remaining twelve could their be one in need of a little repair and a new home? If so I would like to look at it.

As far as the CD40 currently listed. We looked at it and the owners are nice people. It has a lot of nice things on it. I would prefer to buy a cheeper boat and give it my own touch. Actually the one thing I did not like about this particular boat is it is too white for me and I would want to repaint it. Then again this is preference.

Now as far as other choices out their. I know that. I have looked at the Shannon 38 and Pacific Seacraft but I would prefer the CD40. I live on a perfectly good CD31 and still have a house in the country so it is not like I have to move on this right away. I can wait. We looked at a CD36 this week that needed a lot of attention. We might get something like this and put sweat equity into it. Since I know it is a CD40 that I want I do not want to invest in at boat at top dollar that in this economy I might not be able to sell fast enough to be able to purchase a CD40 if one come back on the market.

I understand that the 45 would cost a lot more but perhaps the chance to own one would motivated me to pull a rabbit out of my hat.
