The Coast Guard held a decommissioning ceremony for its Long Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) Station in Caribou, Maine, yesterday, Wednesday, Sept. 1st.
LORAN-C came online November of 1974, marking 35-years of service.
LORAN Station Caribou was the last station to transmit an American Loran signal, ending the 67 years of LORAN-C.

My Dad spent a good part of his Coast Guard career on Loran
I remember sitting in a car with him in the mid-70's driving around Seattle with a Loran receiver, a HP plotter, and a map of the city. I was stunned when the plotter drew our path through the city on the map using the receiver.
I think I was the only kid in my elementary class that could explain the finer points of hyperbolic coordinates.
