Teak replacement

Post by rollo_cd26 »

Where can I find a supply (inexpensive?) of teak toe rail for my CD26? Boat in the dry for 4 years now in Rogers AR, perfect hull .

BTW: just bought and ready to trailer in Arkansas.

In my experience, 'inexpensive' and 'teak', do not go in the same sentence. It's like an oxymoron. :(

"It's like an oxymoron", but different.

In Norfolk, you can get teak from the Yukon Lumber Company. They were good to deal with, but teak is pricey

Teak replacement

I had a good experience with Yukon and they seemed to be less expensive.

If you are going to replace the entire toe rail or rather both of them you might consider going with a wood other than Teak.

There are quiet a few deck woods at your local lumber yard that have the characteristics of Teak without the high price. Woods like Epi come in 5/4 X 6 in long lengths with nice straight grain. Very oily dense wood that is well suited for marine use. With a few coats of Cetol it would be hard to tell the difference. If you are varnishing it would be more apparent but would be perfectly exceptable if you were doing both sides.

There is no cheap or scrap Teak, Steve.

teak

you cannot buy cheap teak...
you need to have a way to force the teak along the contour of the hull . see prior posts..

cheap teak

Post by Ron M. »

You can buy cheap teak,(or cheaper anyway) at least that's what they call it. It is plantation grown and an inferior species. You can detect it by it's lighter weight and color, large growth rings, and uninteresting grain pattern. Often sold at half or less than Tai, Burmese, or Indonesian teak which is what you want. Last time I bought it here,(2 yrs. ago) -18.00/ft.
5/4 in the rough.
BTW forming it to the hull is not difficult. Common woodworking clamps, parallel and 'c' clamps and an extra set of hands will get it done.

Teak replacement

Thanks to all. I appreciate the replies concerning oxymorons and the cost/supply of teak. I have discovered that I only need about 2 feet of wood for the toe rail repair and I am looking at the suggested suppliers. TR

Teak substitute

Post by Jack Carr »

Given the small amount of teak you need Burmese teak is the only way to go. However, as an informational comment, where a good marine wood is needed at a non-teak price, consider spanish cedar (cedra oderata). It machines well, has a natural oil like teak to protect it, it has a redish appearance like mahogany but will grey like all woods. Be careful with the dust. Its nasty.

Hey Ken - Spanish Cedar

Ken C,

This is the stuff I was telling you about. It's not teak, just teak-ish.

Zircons are diamond-ish. Good enough for anybody but the purists. I have used it with good results.

I hope all is well with S.

Best regards,
