1977 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, Hull No. 1400

Post by Sea Hunt »

I have decided to sell S/V Tadpole. While I have mixed feelings about this, I think it will help to motivate me toward my next Cape Dory sailboat, hopefully, a Cape Dory 25D. As long as I have S/V Tadpole I lack the incentive to aggressively pursue a CD 25D. I always have S/V Tadpole to go out sailing and enjoy the day.

A brief summary of S/V Tadpole:

1977 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, Hull No. 1400

Mainsail with cover, hank on working jib with sail bag, Genoa with sail bag, drifter, Bimini top with cover. The working jib is original. The mainsail and Genoa are not original but not new. If I had not decided to sell I would have purchased a new working jib and mainsail this Fall.

2005 Suzuki 6 hp/4 stroke outboard with motor cover and original Cape Dory bronze motor bracket.

Numerous dock lines; 4 fenders; 2 Danforth-style anchors, each with chain and three strand rodes; removable boarding ladder (from West Marine).

There are no soft spots or deck decompression. Prior owner installed new standing rigging in 2006/2007.

No trailer. Unfortunately, no photos. I still have not figured out how to post a photo.

She presently lays to her mooring at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, Miami, Florida.

Selling price: $4,000

If interested, please send me a PM or e-mail.

ty for sale

OMG - will this result in a long list of items for discussion as to the values of the 25 vs the 25D? I wish you luck in finding the right boat - why not keep SV Tadpole? it is really nice to be close to the water when sailing! Also the Ty is more mobile with a trailer and easier to sail singlehanded............IMHO there is no boat as easy to sail as the Ty!

Might as well join the fray.
Th CD25D is a great solo boat but costs are exponentially higher. Dockage, haulout, bottom paint, maintaining inboard engine...
That being said, I wish that I still had my 25D but could keep the Typhoon to travel with. I always trusted the 25D to get me where I needed to go. We had ours in Charleston and I would be heading out from the docks and when we hit the rougher water, other (Larger) boats woudl turn around and head back to the dock while the 25D (Cape Dorys in general) gave us a wonderful day of sailing. Offshore it is a good preformer also and is easy enough for one on deck to do sail changes without having to wake those below.
The amount of time a boat spends away from the dock and actually sailing seems inversely proportional to the size of the boat. We are the smallest boat at our present docks and it is so easy just to hop aboard and five minutes later be sailing. We chartered a Pacific Seacraft 32 earlier this year and had the best sail of the year last weekend on our typhoon.
Just some thoughts to confuse you more.

Dick:

I am not really looking at the Cape Dory 25 (with outboard). I am focused on the CD 25D with diesel auxiliary. So, hopefully no long lists of comparisons, pros, cons, etc. between the two.

I have thought of keeping S/V Tadpole. Unfortunately, I do not think I can reasonably justify maintaining two sailboats. Plus, I would have to buy a trailer for S/V Tadpole as we are only permitted one sailboat at the sailing club mooring field. I cannot justify buying a CD 25D and a trailer for a Ty Weekender.

Bob:

I generally agree with your comments. The bigger the boat, the less she is sailed. In my case, I am looking for a CD 25D because I want to be able to do some short (3-4 day) trips to the Keys, possibly longer trips to Bimini, etc. I cannot do these in S/V Tadpole - at least not at my age :(

I agree. 25D will suit your needs. We have done some offshore passages throughout the Carolinas on our 25D and it was dependable and easy to sail. 25D is still small enough to be out there in short order.
At one time we had a 27 and a typhoon. We daysailed the typhoon and short journeyed the 27. We were lucky in not having to pay dock fees for but one boat though.
Good luck on your search. There are some good ones out there.

CD 25D

I understand - the 25D will give you a longer range for travel. I really like the Ty because in 5 minutes I can be off the dock. It also only takes 5 or 10 to put her away for the night. I haven't yet tried to overnight on her but that is going to be a reality soon. I also like to sail single handed and the Ty is so easy. I just have to convince myself - NO RACING THE TY - and keep it simple!
