Getting High In Jamaica

Post by Como No Cruising »

Whew! Walk down the street in Port Antonio some days and you can get high on second hand smoke. Especially in the indoor market, the fog gets thick. Yet we are lead to believe that it is illegal to use Marijuana in Jamaica. It seems to be everywhere. Although, I have to say that no one offered any to Ann & I. Guess we looked to be too old and too straight for that kind of action.

Port Antonio is kind scruffy and definitely Third World, but the people are friendly and we always felt safe there. According to the locals this entire area of Jamaica has the lowest crime rate of anyplace on the island. We think that is may be due to the fact that so many of the locals are zonked out--but who knows.

For certain, one of the nicest small marinas in the Caribbean is located here. Errol Flynn Marina is first class in all respects, clean, pretty, well managed and safe. Best of all, it has one of the best rates per foot that we have encountered. Additionally, the anchorage in the harbor is very well protected, well marked and the holding is excellent. You can receive WiFi while at anchor.

The general market in town has just about any type of fresh produce imaginable and at a reasonable price. Fresh, locally grown lettuce and Tomatoes are abundant and cheap.

We hired two local marina hands to clean and polish all our stainless fittings and polish and wax the hull. Como No looks almost new now. Time to get underway again. Another 600 plus miles, due west to MExico. More on that later.
