Only if you need to

Dick,

The exterior rubber piece on my Whale Gusher 8 disintegrated and, while I was replacing that, I decided to open the pump and replace the flaps and gaskets.

I found that the pump was very dirty (no surprise after all those years), but I haven't noticed any increase or decrease in the pump's efficiency since the overhaul.

My advice: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Replace when it stops working, sometimes the rubber gets holes in it and one loses suction.

I found a couple of small holes in the flexible hose leading from the bilge to the intake side of the pump. I figured perhaps I dodged a bullet. I taped over the holes and the pump still doesn't work. I'll have to check the hose more thoroughly to make sure there aren't any more holes. I wonder if very small holes in the intake hose can render the pump useless by sucking air rather than disgusting bilgewater! I'd hate to bend myself into a pretzel getting the pump out only to find that all I needed to do was do a simple job of replacing the hose. Anyone ever find that problem???

Warren, some idiot drilled a quarter inch hole in the suction side of my bilge hose while installing a pad eye. since I do all my own work I have a pretty good idea who it was.

I had changed my pump to a Gusher 10 which has even better suction than the original. It would not pull the water out of the bilge with that hole. So small holes, greatly effect performance.

I have noticed the hose has chafed some where it ran under the engine. If some one were to pump while you listened you might be able to hear if there are any leaks. the hose may be the problem but it couldn't hurt to replace those 20 some year old rubber parts either.

Sorry, Steve.

Warren, I feel your pain. Made the same repair on my CD 27 last week. Pump was easy to repair but not so easy to remount. One nut is still not in place. Getting in the port locker resulted in the destruction of my favorite work shirt. Will try again when assistance is available.

Replacing the Whale Gusher 8 pump

Post by RMeigel »

I've replaced Whale Gusher 8 on my CD 27 and I did so from within the port locker. It took patience but not rocket science. I was just relieved that they haven't stopped making them. Finding another with an appropriate configuration wasn't going to be easy.
