Just about to tape the waterline on Far Reach. Looking for some input from CD-36 owners regarding how far they have raised the WL above the factory scribe lines. Especially interested in hearing from those that have been loaded down for extended cruising.

I think I am about 4 or 5 inches above the factory waterline at this point, I have raised it twice. Seems to be working well now. Say goodbye to your bootstripe, or paint a new one (I actually prefer the look without one).

Sounds about right
4 1/2 inches should do it, John. It's probably about how much we raised ours. Ended up doing it twice, like Russell. One unexpected advantage of a raised waterline, especially if you use black bottom paint like we do, is that the oil and tar in many harbours around the world will not mess up your top sides as much in usual conditions. With any sort of chop though, all bets are off, of course.

Not comparable.

It will not be exactly comparable to Greg or Russel's boats, since they have engines and fuel tanks, propellers, shafts, spare parts, spare oil, tools to support the engine etc. I think that I read a number somewhere that indicated a CD-36 sinks an additional inch for every 900 lb of gear.

That's right. But still, with four aboard--even two 11 year olds I suspect we will make up for the stuff we have taken off . . . especially if we are able to break away for some offshore sailing. Hard to say for sure. I have made a number of calculations and I think we will make up for the engine and fuel, engine parts, and other engine related stuff pretty quickly. It will be interesting.
Thanks for the input. By the way, I was reviewing your rudder project last night as I make final preparations for reinstalling my rudder. It's a great how-to.
