Cape Dory 32 drawings

Hi,

I’d like to build the classical type of wooden yacht. It might be ALBERG 29, 32, CAPE DORY 32 or similar cruiser, designed by Carl Alberg. Is it possible to get anywhere the construction drawings for these types of yachts? If there are no construction drawings, at least I’d like to get the theoretic drawings for ship hull and rigging.

Hi Virgas,

Unfortunately the construction drawings for our beautiful boats are not available. We do have the line drawings for the Cape Dory 27, and an owner's version of the line drawings for the Cape Dory 28. To see them, scroll to the top of this page and click on the "CDSOA" logo (that's the one all the way to the left on the navigation bar -- or you can click on the one below my name at the bottom of this posting), that'll take you to our home page. Once on the home page, use the menu on the left side of the page and navigate the following path:

I don't know if they'll help you or not, but most of the Cape Dorys look the same, they just get additional portlights as they grow larger. So you may be able to extrapolate the lines for a much larger boat from those of the Cape Dory 27.

Also, we have the owners manuals for most of the Cape Dory boats. The owners manuals also contain some drawings, at least the sail plans. They may help as well. These manuals are also accessible from our home page and can be found by navigating the following path:

One 'firm lead' is:

The Alberg 22 can trace it's origins directly to a 22 foot sloop which was drawn by Carl Alberg in 1957. In May of that year a drawing for a fractionally rigged, wooden Racer / Cruiser appeared in Yachting Magazine as an Alberg Designed 22 - Foot Sloop....The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem Massachusetts hold Alberg's original drawings for both No.20 the 22 Foot Sloop (Drawings 2933 A through C) and the Alberg 22 (drawings 2933 D through F).

So, the Peabody Essex Museum sounds like a good place to start? Mystic Seaport has an extensive set of collections of drawings, so their advice might be helpful in your quest, as well.

Another way to go about this research project could be to follow up Alberg's relationships with those who built his designs. These would include the Pearsons (Pearson, Bristol), Cape Dory (via, I suppose, Robinhood & Spartan, as the successors to Cape Dory), Whitby Boat Works (Whitby, Ontario), etc.

Since you say you want to build a wooden boat, but those you mention were all designed for fiberglass construction, you may wish to consult a naval architect?

The CDSOA does not have any of the line drawings for Cape Dory boats other than for the CD27 and an owner's version of the line drawings for the CD28. The rest are not readily accessible or available to anyone from the Essex Peabody Museum.

I don't have a copy of this book, so I really don't know what's in it, but you can try Mauch's Sailboat Guide. The Cape Dory 32 is not listed in its table of contents with the other Cape Dorys, but there's a Cape Dory 310 listed. Cape Dory did not build a 310, so I suspect that may be the 32. But I don't think it will provide much more info than we're providing here on this web site.

Did you look at the specifications page for the CD32? If you haven't, take a look at it. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of that page and click on the links for the owners manual and the two brochures. Print out the owners manual as well, the drawings of the sail plans are in the manual.

I own a Cape Dory 32. If it'll help, we can take lots of photos from different angles for you. She is currently on land under a winter frame and cover, so any photos will have to wait until she's uncovered.

I recommend you look closely at the designs of Paul Gartside. He has a very diverse set of designs for either traditional construction methods or the more modern (lots of epoxy) methods.

many of his designs are based on traditional english work boats similar to the designs of Lyle Hess (Bristol Channel Cutter). You can see construction of his 24 ft cutter (design #96) at http://www.gartsideboats.com/gallery.php. Don't be fooled by the 24 ft. length on deck dimension. This boat displaces almost 10,000 lbs and is much bigger than a CD 27.

I'm currently building his 7 ft clinker pram (design #80) and even though it's one of Paul's most modest designs, he always responds promptly to my emails and answers all my questions.
