Remember when? 2003 Northeast Fleet July 4th Float-in.....

Remember when? Here are some photos you may or may not remember seeing. This sequence, shot by Bruce, includes pics of Howard Kolsby's CD33 Gemini, eastbound on the East River heading for Manhassett Bay, on a rainy July 3rd, 2003.

Photos on Manhassett Bay...

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

After our long foggy, rainy trek from Morgan and Keyport, NJ to New York's Manhassett Bay on July 3rd, 2003, the fog lifted as we approached the Verrezano Narrows Bridge, then the rain stopped and the sun came out revealing a dramatic sky that was both dark and bright at the same time.

Thats Howard and Warren & Julie Kaplan in the photo below. Our three boats are rafted together south of the Port Washington YC's mooring field off Plandome, NY.

Cathy,

Here's a photo (possibly taken by Bruce) of us leaving West Harbor of Oyster Bay and headed for Sheffield Island and the clambake that day. Great sailing day it was.

That's Julie and me in the foreground aboard CD27 Sine Qua Non, with Michael Heintz aboard Macht Nichts in front and the late Dick Feffer aboard Adamarie, behind. Both CD 30 MKIIs.

2003 Eastbound Flotilla to Bristol, RI...

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Hi Warren,

Yep, Bruce snapped that photo, but that was a different year. That photo, which just happens to be one of my favorites, was snapped in 2002 whereas the others above were snapped in 2003.

I'm slowly uploading these old photos. I'll get to the 2002 photos at some point - don't know when.

Here are a few more of Sine Qua Non that Bruce snapped during 2003. We were participating in the 2003 Eastbound Flotilla to the rendezvous at Bristol, RI. Sine Qua Non joined the group for part of the cruise in Northport and at Charles Island.

<a href="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/C ... 270270.jpg" target="_blank"><img width="600" src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/C ... 0.jpg"></a>
Sine Qua Non sailing on a windy Huntington Bay on her way to Asharocken Beach. It was so windy that day, that we changed our minds and anchored in Northport Harbor instead in the lee of Little Neck.

<a href="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/C ... 270272.jpg" target="_blank"><img width="600" src="http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/C ... 2.jpg"></a>

We blasted past Sine Qua Non so fast, Bruce almost didn't have enough time to snap these pics.

Cathy,

Thanks for getting my time frame straightened out. Wonderful photos! I remember that sail into Huntington Bay. Blowing very hard and I don't now why the hell I didn't put a reef in as conditions surely dictated it!!

Hello Warren:

A question about sails sets.

From the photos, it looks like it was blowing 20-25 kts perhaps more. With the jib completely furled and with no reef in the main I would think you would have a LOT of weather helm, even on what appears to be a beam reach.

I am asking because I got in a blow last year with S/V Tadpole. I do not have a furler for the jib thinking this would calm things down a little. I also let out the main sheet a little. When I initially dropped the jib it created serious weather helm such that I was concerned about the tiller and rudder being able "to take it". I did not want to raise the jib for fear of having up way too much canvas. I ended up dropping the main also, starting the O/B (a story for another day  ) and motoring back towards the mooring field.

I know the CD 27s have the same type of full keel as the Ty Weekenders.

I would appreciate your thoughts on why you completely furled the jib. Thanks.

P.S. Great photos Bruce :!:
Fair winds,

Robert

Weather Helm

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Sea Hunt,

I had "massive" weather helm that day. And as I wrote in the post just before yours I don't know what possessed me not to put in a reef. I think it was because I didn't have that far to go to the anchorage (or so I thought at the time). :? :(

I'm sure if I was sailing the under the same conditions today with about 22 knots+ (if memory serves) I would have actually been sailing under double reefed main and perhaps a touch of the genny rolled out for balance. My boat is actually balanced better, sometimes, when sailing double reefed in heavy air than it is under full sail in normal conditions.

2002 and 2003

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

This one's from 2002:
Warren Kaplan wrote: <img width="300" src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y13/Se ... sland2.jpg">
It was snapped during the Western Long Island Sound Rendezvous. There were two that year. The second rendezvous, the Eastern Long Island Sound Rendezvous, culminated with a group dinner at Watch Hill, RI.

The Western Long Island Sound Rendezvous was a small cruise with the Fleet meeting in West Harbor (Oyster Bay, NY), a fun race to Sheffield Island, which was followed by a tour of the lighthouse and a lobster & clambake, then a leisurely sail to Port Jefferson.

And this one's from 2003:
