Everybody OK after the NE storm?

Is everyone's boat ok who went through the fierce Nor'easter Saturday night in the NY area? Winds reached 60 at our boat club on City Island, 70 in places on the south shore of Long Island, and NJ coastal areas were also hard hit. Long Island utilities are calling it a "40-year weather event." No boats went over at our place, thank goodness. A winter storm of that strength is a reminder of the importance of serious, careful bracing of one's boat on the hard.

I live on the aforementioned South Shore of Long Island AND I live on the water. Well....wow!! I have a floating dock and the water got so high that I would have had to walk UP the gangplank to get to the floating dock.

The water was boiling and we did get winds gusting to 75. As someone said, we had a hurricane but they forgot to name it.

My electric was out from Saturday night until Monday morning. My phones, tv and internet were out until a half hour ago (6:45PM)

Trees down everywhere!! Its still windy and with the huge amount of rain already more trees are coming down now. Whadda mess!

As for my boat....its shrink wrapped on the North shore of Long Island. I haven't heard from the boatyard so I assume everything is ok.

What a comfort it is to have Raven at home this winter. I just took a walk out and gave all the stands a twist back and forth to check that they were bearing equally with the frost going out of the ground. All is well in the world.

I hope we are about done with this winter though because I have just about had enough, Steve.

I went down Sunday morning and found my starboard aft jackstand tangled in a tarp lying on the ground. The tarp was ballooned out like an eight foot high twelve foot wide spinnaker. The tarp had come loose from a boat one over from my direct starboard neighbor. He had pieces of his strongback scattered on the ground and his tarp had been tied down with kite string and a series of gallon jugs from bow to stern. I doused his spinnaker, cut it loose from my jackstand and put the stand back into position. The jackstand was chained to its partner on the port side but it was still worked out of position by the strength of the wind in the tarp. Thankfully my yard supports my boat with eight stands so it was in no immediate danger and luckilly I stop to check on Orion frequently, especially after a weather event.

I can tell you this. Norwalk and Westport CT are like a war zone. I am lucky we have power most do not. The tree damage is extensive.

I took a ride to the yard, luckily only one mid size stink pot fallen over. Macht Nichts doing well!!!

Hope all have survived without damage!!!!!!

The lake that is normally 125 feet from my front door is now beating at my front door step. Literally.
The ENE or NE wind is pushing the water uphill.

We have been away -- down in FL and NC.

We drove through the storm in GA while it was working it's way up the coast. Well, while part of it was working it's way up the coast. That was before it became a monster. But the drive was horrible with torrentail rainfail so visibility out the windshield was next to nothing.

Saturday our neighbor contacted Bruce to let us know that we should be glad that we installed the new french drain, sump and pump in our basement, especially the 12V backup pump, because the power was out and the pump in their house had stopped working. He had to set up the generator. He also said that there were trees down everywhere. So now we were worried.

Then, on Sunday, we heard from my sister who had just returned from a cruise to the Bahamas. They went with friends that live just a block from us. Anyway, she said that the drive home was horrendous with trees still blocking the roadways and no power so traffic lights weren't working. Their friends, who live in our neighborhood, had an even harder time getting home because of the flooding in Rahway. Now we were really worried.

Then we were contacted by the boat yard to let us know that we should get down to the boat yard because the 70+ mph wind gusts had destroyed tarps, canvas, sails and Fairclough covers. If we couldn't get down to the boat yard right away, they would ckeck the boat for a fee, which I agreed to since we were still in NC. Our boat is, or was, nestled beneath her frame and cover. Anyway, we just got home and we're heading down to the boat yard to assess the damage. I'll let you know what we find.

Cathy... my prayers for Realization. I hope you find her standing firm and no damage. Our boats ARE STRONG. But I know that feeling when the boatyard calls very well. We have been in similar situation down here before. Hopefully, things will turn out ok. Anxiously awaiting your posting.

Okay, we're back.

What a beautiful day it is today -- brilliant clear blue sky and no clouds are anywhere to be seen. It's a balmy 65 degrees. You'd never know what havoc was wrought only a few days ago.

Anyway, Realization is fine and so is her tarp and frame. I checked on a couple friends' boats while I was at it and they were fine too.

It was an obstacle course to get out of our housing development though. There are still trees lying on roofs, in yards, and on cars. The city is still busy removing downed limbs and trees. Of course they only remove their trees (the trees that are between the curb and the sidewalk belong to the city), homeowners have to take care of the rest. Anyway, we were lucky -- no damage to our property, house or the boat.

Great to hear Cathy. We lucked out too other than loss of power for a couple of days. I have to go up to Oyster Bay and check on the boat though. I'm hoping at this stage that "no news is good news!"
