Looking for head doors for 30k

Post by Klem »

I am looking to purchase both head doors for a cape dory 30k. I suspect that the doors are probably the same as for the 30C. The approximate measurements on them are 18X68.5 for the aft door and 18X66" for the forward bi-folding door. If you happen to have removed your doors from your boat, I would be interested in purchasing them.

If not, I guess I will be making some. I checked with the local building center and they don't appear to be a standard size.

It looks like I am going to be building these. At least it gives me an excuse to go to the lumber yard on friday.

The doors on our CD30K are not bi-fold so if you could find the doors from any CD30 they should fit. Also I think the doors are the same from the 27 and 28. Someone from this board should have the info for you, and someone was parting out a CD28 I think just a week or so ago.

Seadog, thanks for the reply. If you doors are not bifold, which way do they open? I can see where the hinges were on the port side for the aft door but the way the frame is setup, the forward door certainly looks to have been a bifold coming from starboard. If there is indeed enough room for the door without doing a bifold, that would be great.

Can anyone state for sure whether the doors from a 28 are the same? One of the people who responded to my post measured the doors on their 28 and got 64.5" tall for the aft door and 63.5" for the bifold. Is there supposed to be that much air gap?

My 28 doors are a different size

Post by sealark »

I just measured the doors on my 28. They happen to be in my garage getting a facelift. The aft door is 65-3/4" and the bifold door is 64-3/4".

It appears the size doesn't necessarily stay consistent - even among 28's.

I suspect you do want a good air gap to insure sufficient circulation for folks in the v-berth. By the way, KAYLA's bi-fold door has been stored for over 7 years. We just never found the need to reinstall it.

Thanks to everyone who has checked their doors. Sounds like I am going to go with some doors that have an air gap. I suspect that the bifold door needs to be mounted all of the way up to make the track work but the aft door can probably be mounted in whatever way I prefer.

I forgot to mention that our aft door has about a 2" strip of rubber at the bottom to assist in keeping shower water out of the main salon. The CD30 my have a slightly different configuration.
