proper outboard for inflatable

Post by Jerry J Commisso »

When I purchased my CD30 it came with a 9' Avon inflatable with wooden floor boards and an 8hp Evinrude outboard. The motor runs great but is just to heavy to lug around. The manual calls for a maximum of 8hp. I would like to sell the 8hp and put the smallest engine possible on the inflatable. I was considering a 2.5hp or 3.5hp engine for ease of carrying and or storage . I wanted to make sure that if the wind fills in I will have enough power to get around with these smaller engines. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jerry

I have an 8.5' inflateable with the wooden floorboards and center floor inflation tube,I went the opposite dirccton you have taken.I started with a 3.5HP,tried a 4HP and setteled with a 5HP.
The smaller motors would not plane the dingy, they were fine for most situations, but thy did not let the dingy realize it's full potential.I am happy with the 5HP. It is a little heaver to deal with, but I have the confidence that the dingy and the motor are well matched and will perform as designed.
