marinas in North Carolina

Post by TWISTER »

I just bought a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, and am in the process of re-fitting her. I hope to have her finished by end of January, and would like some ideas, as to where to keep it. I lived on Cape Cod 25 years ago, and have lived in Raleigh ever since, so I've been away from boating. I'ld like someplace where I might get out to the Ocracoke, if possible. I would also like someplace with a bit of a social atmosphere. Also, since I've been away from boating for a bit, I need to take a couple of lessons, preferable on my boat. Can anyone help me out.

Twister,

Try the marinas in Oriental, NC. Pecan Grove and Oriental Harbor Marina. There are other Typhoons in Oriental, with captains who I am sure would be more than helpful regarding getting you up to speed learning to sail. Also, think about joining the Carolina CDSOA Fleet. We are small in numbers, but do enjoy our cruises as a fleet.

Ditto for the Oriental idea. Great place to sail from and into. Very hospitable, greet places to gather after a day on the water. Within range of Ocracoke, but a long day in a Typhoon. We lived on Ocracoke and had a Typhoon and a CD 27. The sailing was fantastic!
Washington NC is another area that has some good sailing but is way up river. A good trip to Ocracoke may be from Washington to Bath, then on to Ocracoke. You can go to Belhaven and then to Ocracoke. All great stopping areas. You'll love the sailing.

Another plug

As a full time resident of Oriental I have to affirm what the others are saying. This is simply an ideal sailing community.

One of the hidden gems of this place is Sea Harbour Marina & Yacht club. It is, without question, the nicest facility around with terrific amenities and a non-resident yacht club with lots of social functions. There are some smaller slips available there at present that will accomodate a Typhoon nicely.

To get an idea of what this place is all about Google Oriental, NC and check it out. Here are a couple of links that might help out.

Oriental is now 2-3/4 +/- hours from Raleigh and an easy drive with good stops (especially if you like NC barbecue!)

Twister,

We keep Miss E at Northwest Creek Marina, in Fairfield Harbor, outside of New Bern. I'm not sure what kind of social scene you're looking for, but we've met some great folks and there are usually enough of them around for an informal happy hour, every day! The Neuse River is a great place to sail too, and I think would be perfect for a Ty. You should check it out.

Thanks, You have confirmed what I thought of where I should keep my boat. Which route is the fastest out to Oriental from Raleigh?

Miss Wanda's

Post by Ron M. »

This place is more of a stop over for transients but what a hoot the owner, Miss Wanda is.
Alligator River Marina. It has maybe a dozen slips with finger piers and launch ramp, ice, fuel, restaurant/store. Spotless showers and laundry. Miss Wanda runs a tight ship and doesn't take any guff. Very reasonable rates, 1.00/ft. good, inexpensive chow at the restaurant. I enjoyed staying there for a couple of days waiting for the weather to improve last month.
