Info for Zeida

Post by Tom Keevil »

Hi Zeida,

Thanks for the compliments. Listen to Dean, as he is doing it right. Mine were taken with an old Canon S30 digital camera. I doubt that my photos would survive anything larger than an 8 x 10 print. On a few of those shots I probably sharpened the contrast a bit with Photoshop.

Photos - between the bridges...

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Here we are waiting between the Morgan Rail bridge and the Rte. 35 Morgan Highway bridge. They're only a couple hundred feet apart. There was a dredging operation going on at the time, and there wasn't much room to maneuver - especially when waiting with other boats. Both bridges are closed.

<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... G_0008.jpg" target="_blank"><img width="600" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... 8.jpg"></a>
That's me working hard to keep the boat still. And that's the rail bridge behind me.

<a href="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... G_0007.jpg" target="_blank"><img width="600" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... 7.jpg"></a>
And that's the highway bridge and couple other sail boats waiting for it to lift.

Cathy, your saving grace is that it wasn't windy in there. Trying to keep the boat still is much easier when the bow isn't constantly trying to get away from you.

I really should try posting some pictures, Steve.

Hi Steve,

We have to go through those bridges every time we take the boat out/in. The boat yard where we keep our boat is upriver of both bridges.

Believe me, we've had a alot of practice and one thing we've both learned how to do is maneuver that boat in tight quarters. It doesn't matter how hard the wind is blowing or how fast the river is running, you've got to be able to control the boat and keep her sitting in one spot while waiting for either bridge. It's a tight spot between those bridges and there are some shallow spots as well, but we've shared that little "pond" with a least a half dozen other sailboats plus a few power boats all at once. Most of the powerboats can get under the highway bridge without an opening, but they cannot get through the rail bridge. If they're trying to head in, if they're smart, they'll head back out and wait just outside the inlet rather than having to deal with a bunch of trapped sailboats.

Anyway, most of us are good at it since we all keep our boats on that river (Cheesequake Creek). It's the folks leaving in the spring for the yacht club mooring fields and other marinas and those coming in for winter storage that we worry about. They're not used to it and it can get pretty dicey in there.

This is from about 1999, at the Bluewater Bay Marina in Niceville, FL.
Brigitta was my second CD25. She is now located on the St Johns River near Jacksonville, FL which is where I found and feel in love with Cape Dorys to begin with.

Cape Dory Eye Candy

Post by Michael Ellis »

Here is one of my favorite pictures of our CD 330 Sweet Chance. This was taken just after sun rise in the marina at Blake Island State Park on the west side of Puget Sound. I think the reason I like it so much is it captures the quiet and tranquility of Blake Island. Situated across the Sound from Seattle, the entire 475 acre island is a park, only accessible by boat. Surrounded on all sides by the activity of life, it truly is an oasis.

Seattle

Post by gates_cliff »

I was just in Seattle this past weekend. My first time there. Wow! What a great place, Looks like a sailors paradise, well we did have exceptionally bautiful weather the whole weekend.

Didn't do any sailing but took ferries from Seattle to Brimerton and Bainbridge, I was just blown away by the beauty of the place. Now, I want to move there. Unfortunately my wife and employer might have different ideas about that, although my wife did like it. wonder if there is much demand for project managers, hmmmmmm.

What you see in the background is the south end of Bainbridge Island. So if you took the Seattle/Bremerton ferry you passed right through that patch of water. Blake Island sits just southeast of the east end of Rich Passage.

Besides the ferry, we get some other pretty interesting vessels transiting Rich Passage. This isn't a Cape Dory, and isn't even a sailboat, but still an impressive sight.

Bruce snapped these pics of a blue heron on Seldon Creek north of Essex in 2007.

Below, the 2 boats on the left and the dark-hulled boat on the right are all Cape Dorys.

Seldon Creek

Post by kerlandsen »

Many many years ago, my dad and I were moving our Tartan 27 from Pine Island bay to Portland, CT.
"hey, what's that on the side of the river?"
"Seldon Creek"
"let's go check it out"
Ok

We get in there and we are amazed at the size of the boats. Some 'anchored' to the rocks. How can they turn around it was so tight? Big boats, like 40 ft. Just a spectacular spot.
We continued north in the creek, it got a ton wider. My dad says we should head towards the middle. I object, since the birds were not floating on the water, only standing on the bottom, ie the water was 2" deep.
I got in the dinghy and rowed out in front. An oar length was fine. Did this all the way back to the edge of the river. Got back on board and headed for the channel. We only hit bottom when a large tugboat went by and made a wake that caused us to bottom out in the troughs of his wake.
It was a fun adventure to talk about.
Beautiful place and I have not been back since.
Thanks for sharing.

Kyle

Hi Kyle,

If "...how and where you use your boat..." includes your family, and you'd like to share photos of your sailing family, then by all means, include them.
