I recently purchased a 1979 Cape Dory 27 and would appreciate advice and comments about using the sail locker forward of the v-berth for ground tackle.
We are considering adding an anchor roller and a through deck fitting so the anchor, chain and line can be stored forward.
Thanks.

Re: cape dory 27 ground tackle
We have a 1980 Cape Dory 27, which must have a different layout. The small forepeak forward of our V-berth is a locker for the anchor rode, and it wouldn't be big enough for sails. We've divided the locker in half with a piece of plywood and installed two naval pipes, so we can have two anchor lines ready to run. We have a 15# CQR as a utility anchor (it replaces at Danforth 16H, which we still carry) and a Danforth 22S as a 'storm' anchor. We like them all. We carry the big Danforth on chocks on the cabin top, starboard of the mast, and the plow nestled between the Dorade vent and the mast (with a light lashing). The smaller Danforth lives in the lazarette. We don't feel the need for a roller, although we've noticed that later model 27's have one, used in conjunction with a SS chainplate for the forestay that laps down the stem. The fittings might be available from Rig-Rite. Hope you enjoy the boat as much as we do.

Re: cape dory 27 ground tackle
I have a Cape Dory 27 and certainly do use the rode locker. I have a 22# Bruce with 30' of chain and 200' of 1/2' rode. The anchor hangs off the bow but all else is in the locker.Jeffrey Horbar wrote: I recently purchased a 1979 Cape Dory 27 and would appreciate advice and comments about using the sail locker forward of the v-berth for ground tackle.

Thanks.
I couldn't figure a way to add aroller on the bow without covering up my chocks, so I rigged a SS fixture for the anchor shank to sit in and bolted it to the stem (which has 3 holes for attaching fore stay)
I also cut a chunk out of the bronze stem for the shank to rest in.
I also have 13# danforth w/200' of rode. There is room for all the rode in the locker and the weight has not seemed to affect performance.
Good sailing

I have a 27' Cape Dory and did not like the ideaJeffrey Horbar wrote: I recently purchased a 1979 Cape Dory 27 and would appreciate advice and comments about using the sail locker forward of the v-berth for ground tackle.

of carrying a Danforth hanging from the bow pulpit.
This was the arangement when I purchased the boat.
I like having a plow or a bruce available at the bow.
The only way to accomadate this was to have the
anchor on the forward deck.
As you know, this is not a good idea. I had Svensen's
marine fabricate a stainless steel (tubing) bow sprit.
Now I can carry a 35# Bruce and a 35# plow with no
problem. The bow sprit was expensive but, I beleive,
worth it.

Wow! Those seem like big anchors.
