CD 28 ports

Post by Paul Grecay »

My CD 28 is hull #31 (1976) and lacks the bronze ports that are characteristic of CDs. In addition, it has a 24hp Volvo Penta MD2B (which runs like a top). I have never seen any CDs without the bronze ports...is mine the only one? Are there other differences between my boat and others that I need to know about. I have heard that there are a variety of chainplate configurations and that some are more prone to corrosion. Does anybody have any problem with chainplate corrosion? (The backstay chain plate on my boat appears corroded, but not seriously so). Lastly, I am considering replacing the lexan ports if I can find bronze, so let me know if there are any salvage wrecks out there with useable ports. Thanks.

Paul, you are not alone! I have had my CD 28, 75 for 10 years, between the Bahamas and Bar Harbor Me. I have seen about 8 plastic port CD 28's. I cruised with two in the Bahamas in 90.
Yes, who wouldn't prefer the bronze ports. But, what do you do with the larger ports over the galley? These add alot to the boats appeal when spending time aboard. Put in large bronze? The ports and there parts are still readily available(last I checked) through an outfit in Fla. PHYTI I think? Ask around.
I looked into bronze ports, hard to find, expensive new etc. I have resolved the issue by alwaqys finding something, sails, auto pilots dodgers, heaters etc, that add more enjoyment for the money than repalceing the ports, they work o.k. too, change the gaskets every few years and they seem to last as long as that damned old volvo of mine now 22 years old, never been out of the boat and never ever failed to bring me home, ever. Good luck with the ports.
