Boston Harbor Island Regatta - 9/26
http://islandalliance.org/regatta.asp
It's a magnificent figure 8 course (13 miles) around the Boston Harbor Islands. It's a pursuit race, with starting times adjusted to give the slower boats a head start.
This will be the 4th year that the Cape Dory 28s will be competing as a class (3 boat minimum), the 2nd year a trophy will go to the first CD and the 2nd year the best overall finish by CD class will be added to the permanent plaque.
It's a fun event, competitive but open and welcoming to novices. Make sure your class is represented!
(Our of town boats anchor at Peddocks I. on Friday night, which is close to the start.)

Friday or Saturday?
Would like to race on Saturday and then leave the boat in a safe place Saturday and Sunday nights without spending an arm and a leg.
Tantalus will be there
Tantalus & crew are looking forward to the 2009 BHIR; this annual charity race is always lots of fun.
It's very casual racing, without the attitudes and stresses usually associated with races. With a pursuit style staggered start, there is no crowd at the starting line, so lots of beautiful old boats participate in this event without fear of damaging the brightwork. The emphasis here is really on fun and sailor camaraderie. The race proceeds go toward cleaning & maintaining the Boston Harbor Islands, and improving public access to them.
Tantalus will anchor in Portuguese Cove (Peddocks Isle) Friday night and make a weekend out of it. Any and all CDs are more than welcome to join in. Portuguese Cove has a good mud bottom and is just a short distance from the start/finish lines. It's also a great spot to watch from, as the boats go right past on the final leg of the race. Peddocks has hiking trails, and a nice view of the Boston skyline too.
See you there!

Sailing involves the courage to cherish adventure and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.

I think that makes it 4 28s
Neil, Stan, John and Tom/Angela makes for a four boat class of 28s, at least.

Sprite is registered
Sprite is registered. I will probably join you at Peddick's on Friday but I may need to pick up my crew downtown after sailing down (the kids have school).

Check the ferry schedule
Jeff,
Peddocks is more than an hour from the inner harbor. If the harbor island ferry is running early, it might be easier for the crew to meet you at George's Island.
Not sure if I'll be at Peddocks on Friday, as my crew usually arrives early on Saturday morning. I might have limited ability to bring crew out from Marina Bay and make the transfer at Peddocks.

Sorry I cannot join you all
I will be travelling for work that week, and will have to miss the race this time. Have a great time!

I registered.
Hopefully the weather will be more like '06 and '07 and less like '08.
Planning to anchor at Peddocks Friday night. Any suggestions regarding a mooring or slip Saturday and Sunday nights while I attend to some other business?
I should have room for at least one more crew on race day--maybe more depending on others' pending decisions.

Re: I registered.
Boston Harbor Sailing Club has $45 transient moorings available in the inner harbor.Stan W. wrote:Any suggestions regarding a mooring or slip Saturday and Sunday nights while I attend to some other business?

Marina Bay can accomodate you, with slips only and at higher cost than a mooring in the inner harbor. There's T service available if you don't mind the walk (about a mile) to the North Quincy station.
The cruising guide is on the boat. Stay tuned.

Perry Cove float-in
For those planning on Friday night at Perry Cove at Peddocks Island...
This is a most casual float-in. No agenda, no chairman, no rules. Make whatever arrangements for socializing in advance (e.g., right here on the message board) or as you arrive at the anchorage.
I suggest monitoring channel 9 as a hailing channel.
There's a mooring field to the east ($) and a mooring free open anchorage to the west (free). Best for keeping the fleet together would be to pick moorings or anchorage where the two meet, weather permitting.
The bottom is mud and the holding is good. There's wind and current and anchored boats have a hard time deciding where the pointy end should go in light air. My 22 lb. Claw has held with zero drag through 180 degree wind shifts and wind to 20 knots.
I have crew arriving at Marina Bay early on Saturday morning and won't be at Peddocks overnight. I will likely pass through the anchorage on Saturday morning though, on my way to the start.
Fee free to PM or email me with any questions.

Re: Portuguese Cove float-in
We're thinking "Portuguese" Cove, yeah? Or, is there a new cove on Peddocks?Neil Gordon wrote:For those planning on Friday night at Perry Cove at Peddocks Island...

Re: Portuguese Cove float-in
Nope. It's really just one cove but the east end and west end are named separately on the chart. There is just a bit of rock jutting out in the middle and I suspect that several hundred years ago the spit was more substantial. You can hardly find a separation now.John Ring wrote:We're thinking "Portuguese" Cove, yeah? Or, is there a new cove on Peddocks?

Is there a place to leave dinghys?
Tom and I are planning to be there with Abby (is there a dog-as-crew category?). We'll anchor at Perry/Portuguese Cove on Friday night but have been pondering how to handle the inflatable. Is there a safe, designated place we can leave it during the race?
BTW--this is our first real race and we're just hoping to get through it without running into anyone else's boat...
