diaphram pump

Post by trapper »

I have finally dried out Saga--found the leak (vents). I now need a better bilge pump. Someone told me they had a diaphragm pump mounted in the port cockpit locker in a CD25D that kept the boat dry. I need advise on make and model.

Whale Urchin

Post by John Ring »

Most CDs came with a Whale Gusher 8, as described in the thread below. The Gusher 8 is no longer being made.

As a replacement for my Gusher 8, I put a Whale Urchin in Tantalus last year. It was an easy install, and it works great. The plastic cover in the new design keeps sunlight off the rubber boot, so it should last a long time.

Cheers,
John

bilge pump

Post by trapper »

Thanks John for the response. When we purchased Saga, she was equipped with a manual bilge pump (like you described) and an electric bilge pump. When we first went on board, she had water over the sole. We pumped her out with the manual pump. After we purchaser her, we put a battery on board and a solar trickle charge to take care of the battery and 12v bilge pump, all of this to keep her from sinking until we could get her out. The old electric pump packed up pretty quickly so we replaced with a cheap rule.

We have replaced the cutlass bearing and serviced the seacocks which stopped the below the waterline leaking and now we have finally stopped the rain from coming in. We are ready to address the bilge pump system. I think the whaler needs a strainer on the bottom of the bilge. It leaves 4 or 5 inches of water as does the electric rule.

I remember someone with a 25D writing that they had a small diaphragm pump. I was just wondering what make and model.

BTW, John, Saga's stickers look great, thanks:

Manual Bilge Pump

Post by Jack Carr »

I just installed a replacement pump on my CD22D and used the Whale Urchin. It worked out fine. Make sure you order the 'thru deck' version with the removeable handle. I think the model is BP9013.

Urchin it is

Post by Joe Myerson »

Fran,

I checked my in-cockpit bilge pump, and it's a Whale Urchin, not a Gusher. I recently replaced the external rubber gland, as well as the diaphram. The kits are readily available from Defender.

A twice a year application of silicone lube or 303 Aerospace protectant will keep the rubber diagraph healthy and crack free..

same for every piece of rubber on a boat, especially the port and hatch gaskets..

Silicone it is

Post by Joe Myerson »

Randy,

Good point. I have been putting silicone on that outside diaphram, and it is standing up nicely.

I'll have to start putting it on the hatch and port gaskets, too.

Whale Gulper 220

Post by bottomscraper »

On Mahalo we have two electric bilge pumps and one manual. The smaller of the two electrics is a Whale Gulper 220 which is a small diaphragm pump that is mounted well above the bilge. The switch and pickup are both mounted low in the bilge. The second electric pump is a high capacity Rule 3700 mounted about 6 inches above the bottom of the bilge along with the switch. So far the only time this larger pump and switch have gotten wet are when I test it each spring.

The smaller pump does all the work. It has a built in check valve so water doesn't run back when the pump shuts off. This pump takes care of condensation and minor leaks as well as when we drain our ice box (a separate sump and pump would be better but...) This pump is also hooked to a counter so we know how many times it has run when we have been gone. This pump has a low capacity so it's not going to save your boat from sinking, it's job is to keep the bilge reasonably dry. Note that this pump is not actually marketed as a bilge pump.
