Noank to Perth Amboy

Hell Gate
Barry:
The most important tip in getting through Hell Gate is to study Eldridge's very closely to be sure you will be following the current through the gate. You should probably plan the entire voyage around the Hell Gate currents. For instance, if the current will be fair early in the morning, plan on staying the night at City Island and shoot Hell Gate at the right time. If the best time is mid-day, plan around that. Keep in mind that the Ebb tide flows both ways on the East River--at Hell gate and south it flows towards NY Harbor, but above that, the ebb tide flows toward LI Sound. Therefore, you may have to buck a current under the Throgs Neck Bridge to the Brothers in order to gain a fair current at the Gate. Once in the gate, you will need to be alert due to eddies and swirls. Be sure to steer toward the WEST side of Roosevelt island as you pass the Gate (closest to Manhattan)--the East side has low bridges.
Have fun!!

Re: Noank to Perth Amboy
Barry,
Bill's description is right on the money.
It's best to try to hit Hell Gate at slack water if you can but an hour before or after slack is okay.
Are you heading to the Raritan Yacht Club's mooring field? We're at Lockwood Boat Works off the Cheesequake in Morgan, NJ. Maybe we'll see you.
Will you be heading back through Hell Gate again in July for the rendezvous? We are. I will be organizing the westbound fleet to Niantic Bay.

Re: Noank to Perth Amboy
Barry,
I will be bringing my boat from Westbrook Connecticut to Raritan Bay about the same time if you want to form a rather small convoy. Let me know if you are amenable.
Thanks,

Re: Noank to Perth Amboy
I have made the tirp down the Sound and through the Gate several times. Each time I planned to hit Hell Gate at slack tide, which I did, and it was a piece of cake. I would not try it on an adverse tide. I am not that courageous or crazy. Beware of fog on the Sound. I hit it at night (we move all night) and the tugs were all around us: there are very high levels of commercial traffic. You should have radar. I also hit a strong thunderstorm, which blanked out my radar and left me blind in horizontal rain, at night. No fun. So pick your time, weather and tide right. Good luck. Sailing along NYC is great fun just to sightsee!
