FLOTILLA to NIANTIC BAY -- RENDEZVOUS 2000

Post by Catherine Monaghan »

Realization and her crew plan to sail from Morgan, NJ to Niantic Bay, CT for the CDSOA Inc., NE Fleet Rendezvous 2000 in July.

Is anyone out there interested in meeting us along the way and forming a fleet of Cape Dorys?

It's a 125-mile (nautical miles) trip for us from Morgan to Niantic Bay and I am currently planning on segmenting our trip into three 40-mile (+ or -) days rather than one 25-hour non-stop trip. The same goes for the trip back.

Anyone interested in joining the fleet for days 1, 2 or 3 (or all three), is more than welcome.

As it is still very early in the planning stages, I don't have a definite departure date yet. This is just something for everyone to start thinking about. But, if you're interested, please let me know soon. If your home port is strategically located along the route, it may be used as a stopover point along the trip.

If Life Is Grand and the wind makes time. I'd like to sail one of my Ty's to Niantic. I suspect I'll be out of Guilford, CT Harbor.
I'll be in touch. Nice to be sailing east for a change. Friends in New London will be glad to see more CD's than usual.

Hi Catherine...I'd be interested in joining up. A place you might want to consider for a stop over is Charles Island, Milford. A lot of boats seem to stop here for "overnighters" Look at the chart carefully, for when you sail behind Charles Island in the anchorage area ,stay south and come in from the east. there is a sandbar that you can walk in knee deep water from Chales Island to the mainland if you were to sail in behind Charles from the northwest.

Catherine - I usually spend my first day coming dowm the Hudson, around the Battery, and stopping in Rye or Stamford on my first night (if we are stopping). I would be interested in joining up with your fleet from Stamford. Please keep me posted as the time gets closer.

Thanks again to both you and Leo for all your hard work,

Catherine;
I'll be sailing from Mystic. However will be anchoring in Niantic Bay on the 11th as the Tall Ships will be arriving there on the 11th and they will depart early AM on the 12th for the parade into New London. FYI..the bay anchorages near the Yacht Club are fine generally protected from SW winds by Black Point. Should the weather kick up, go inside via the bridge, up the river which is an excellant anchorage.
Take a quick look at your chart to verify. The prevailing winds at that time of year are SW. Keep to the area near Black Point as you will be able to stay in the lee from seas and wind.

I plan on follwing the ships from Niantic to New London which depending on winds is only about 1.5 hours on the CD25 lead sled.

Re: Don, when are you moving to Mystic?

Don,

Just wondered when you will be arriving at Noank shipyard. I'll be down at the yard for most of the weekend, Fri., Sat., and Sunday getting Hanalei ready to go in next week Friday or Saturday. If you are around any of the three days this weekend, stop over and say hello. Spent last Saturday cleaning teak! Gee, that's fun!!!

Splashing on the 15th of April

Post by Don Carr »

Dave;
I am splashing on the 15th of April at Niantic and plan sail to the Noank mooring on either the 17th or 18th. Have to get the bottom painted next weekend along with a mast wax job. As I mentioned when I saw you I have some leftover Cetol would you care to try it on a small unobtrusive area of your teak? This weekend I will be in New Jersey racing (someone elses boat)against J24's so I won't see you this weekend.I catch up with you in April when I get there.

Fair Winds.

Re: Niantic Bay may be crowded.....

Catherine,

In looking at the www.opsail2000ct.org web site, it looks like there could be as many as 36 tall ships in Niantic Bay the night of the 11th! Now, Niantic Bay is large, but that is a LOT of ships! And, a LOT of BIG ships! I'm tentatively planning on saililng Hanalei down from Noank the morning of the 11th. She should be there around 1200 to 1300 hours. Look forward to seeing you all there. Check out the above web site. It has a lot of information and schedules.

Catherine:
Might I suggest Westbrook, CT as the last stopover? Pilot's
Point is a huge marina with all the mod cons, or there is a decent
mooring behind Duck Island for the rugged types who don't need
to step ashore...
