CD28 Leaks, corroded backing plates,hull/ deck joint

Post by Ken Spenceley »

I am looking at a CD28 and have found badly corroded steel backing plates at aft port lower shroud and in the forepeak under the teak bowsprit platform . It appears the platform has lifted 1/4" . Water seems to come from the hull/deck joint area although wiring is wet below mast. Should the teak toe rail be removed and rebedded ? What would be the appropriate repair for the corroded plates ? Would appreciate comments on these problems and repair possibilities. Also cost of repairs ?

I have no experience with the backing plates for the shrouds but if you have a leaking hull to deck joint this could contribute to that problem.
I have however replaced the steel backing plate under the bowsprit. I did the work myself and the it cost about $200 for a new stainless steel backing plate and around $150 for the teak to build a new bowsprit.
The hardest part of the whole job is getting the old one out. I struggled mightily until the whole thing came out with a bang smacking me on the head and giving me a nasty cut. Because I replaced the bowsprit as well I just glued the new backing plate in place and then drilled the holes for the new bowsprit. Its a messy job in tight quarters but once done I'll never have to go up there again. I also fixed some deck problems under the bowsprit at the same time. Several of the bolts holding the bow pulpit had leaked and caused the old backing plate to corrode and leaving a small wet spot in the deck. This was conveniently under the bowsprit. Good luck

Russ,

I noticed that the backing plate for our bowsprit is loosing the paint that once covered it. It is flaking off. I do not see rust as such yet.
Did you identify the leak source? (was that leak coming from under the bowsprit?)

Also, someone mentioned that the bowsprit was being moved upwards I believe, by this rusting and water intrusion..how much movement are we talking about here?

Now a stupid question..I am red/green colorblind. The surface of my backing plate appears to be a dark coloration, but it is not scaled with rust. Was the rust you noticed something that was flaking off, and obvious, or was it mostly hidden from touch or view?

Thanks,

Larry, When I looked at mine the paint was flaking but you could see only a small amount of rust. I knew there was a leak in one of the bolts that holds the bow pulpit. Some of the deck was getting wet and mushy so I decided I had to do something. This is one of those things that just kept going. I thought that if the deck was wet here it might be wet under the bowsprit ( it was ) and that the bowsprit might be rotting ( it wasn't ). What happened is that water leaked through the hole onto the backing plate and slowly corroded it. When I got it off it turned out that that corner was only paper thin. The rest was fine and structurally pretty sound. I had had mine surveyed about 4 years earlier and the surveyor told me to chip it and paint it. Well I went whole hog and decided to put a new stainless steel one in. Of course I pretty much trashed the bowsprit taking it off so I had to build a new one. The new one I made out of strips of teak all glued together with bisquits in between. Its really a brute now and is way stronger than the old one. This really not that bad a project like I said the hardest part is getting the old one out. I hope I answered your questions. Write me if you have any more
