Message board prizes - just for fun

In recognition of the popularity of the board, I seem to remember a prize being given for the board´s messages passing a certain number last year.

Wouldn´t it be fun to begin some milestone giveaway for our beloved CD message board? Would the board webmasters be interested in doing something for the magic number of 250,000 and then again for 500,000 and maybe 1,000,000?

I´ll begin by offering a free crewed weekend cruise on Lake Ontario for the 500,000th message, any other offers?

The Lake Michigan Cape Dory Owners will donate a burgee for the next milestone. I have an idea though. Somebody usually gets silly and logs on repeatedly in an effort to be the magic number. How about Walt and Catherine coming up with a number, say 193 less than, or 257 over, the milestone. That becomes the milestone winner. (Should we call them knotstones? never mind, where was I, oh yes) They don't announce the secret number until the secret milestone number is reached. I'm sure all of us trust our Webmasters and this could put everyone on an equal footing. What do you think?

Dennis Truett - who won the <a href="http://www.toolworks.com/cgi-bin/tw/wwb ... 8">100,000 visitor prize</a> - has <a href="http://www.toolworks.com/cgi-bin/tw/wwb ... 4">offered a burgee</a> for #250,000. Perhaps LMCDOA would like to offer a hat (or even our new <a href="http://www.toolworks.com/capedory/ccdostore.htm">Cape Dory license plate frames</a>)?

IMO picking a random number is more like a lottery - the fun is in celebrating all the zeros. So let's try to do this legitimately and hope no one ruins it.

Here are the rules:

<b>The Visitor #250,000 prize goes to the person who brings up the message board, sees number 250,000, and posts a message to that effect.

However, anyone who displays the page repeatedly to run the counter will be disqualified (and possibly embarrassed).</b> "Repeatedly" means displaying the page more than once in a couple of minutes. An automatic log is being kept, so we will know if this happens.

In that case, the prize will be awarded to the legitimate person who would have been #250,000, if that can be determined.

Please, everyone - don't mess this up by pounding "Reload". You will be spotted if you do.

We could make it more honest by turning the counter off completely, but that would spoil the fun for everyone.

I am curious about something. When I logged on a few minutes ago, I was visitor 247,819. Earlier today, from my office, I was visitor 249,000 plus something. Is there a sensitivity to how I access the site that causes the count to be using a different base?

Browsers store the most recently visited pages in a cache so they don't have to download them repeatedly. Depending on the browser settings, you may get a pretty old version of the message page, and a correspondingly old counter number. Sounds like that's what happened on your home machine.

If you mostly view pages that don't change, you can leave your browser set as is and hit Reload or Refresh to see the latest message page. Otherwise you may want to reconfigure your browser's cache settings to reload more often.
