max prop

Post by Robert Fisher »

I'm considering replacing the fixed, three-blade prop on my CD28 with a Max-Prop feathering prop. Reduced drag while under sail is part of the incentive, but I'm especially interested in the claimed increase performance in reverse. The main stumbling block is reaching for the credit card. It's expensive, even for boat stuff. Any encouraging or discouraging words from those who have one or know of someone who has one?

I had a maxprop and loved it. In reverse or forward, it was great. A beautiful piece of machinery, it belonged on a mantelpiece. It is worth every penny, but it takes a lot of them. On my current boat, a 48 foot ketch, I swapped out a 22" fixed 3 blade with an Autoprop. I could have gone with a maxprop, and it was a tough decision. i decided to go with the innovative new style. It is a totally different design from the Maxprop. I picked up what I think is about 20% performance over the fixed prop (which was like dragging a refrigerator). I can put the engine at idle and in gear and do 5 knots. I do 7 at about 1700 RPMs. Self feathering (and in the Autoprop case, self pitching) props are the best. Between the Max and the Auto, the Max is a more conservative choice. I have had the Auto for one season, and will know more after this one. So far, I have nothing bad to say about either. By theway, there are some lower cost alternatives to he Max.
