I am replacing my old depth sounder with a new one. The RCA jack on the old transducer cable is not the same size as the jack on the new depth sounder. With a slight modification I was able to get it to fit, not a perfect fit but I was getting a depth reading. Does anyone know if this will work accurately. Or is it possible to damage the new depth sounder with the wrong transducer. It will be much easier to use the existing unit already mounted thru the hull than to install a new one. The depth sounder I am replacing is very old and I have no information about it.
Thanks in advance

Re: transducer advice
While it may be possible that both transducers are meant to operate at the same frequency, and have the same electrical characteristics, it is unlikely, and in fact I would be surprised if they were the same in any fashion. That said, yes, you can do damage to the new driver circuit for the transducer if the wrong component is used. So you are taking your chances. If you are adamant about using the old transducer, at least call the manufacture and check it out with their technical service.
I am replacing my depth and speed instruments in 2 weeks or so, and will be replacing two thru-hull transducers and pulling out a seacock and redrilling the hole to fit one of the new 2in. transducers. Finally, I am going to block off the hole created by the old depth trnsducers location. A bunch of work...
