CD27 engine

We are seriously considering buying a CD27 1978 and were advised by a broker that this boat is underpowered. Do any of you have thoughts or comments or experiences that would be helpful? Thank you.

Hi,
While on this topic, does anyone know how much headroom is in a CD-27? Are there any good interior photos available on the Web? Does the 400+ D/L ratio kill its light air performance? How does the CD-27 compare to the CD-28?

I also have a CD 27 with a ysb8 so far so good, but more power would be a advantage, but not a problem for me,we cruise at about 6 kts.

The Yanmar 8hp is an "auxiliary" power plant. It will move the boat along at 5.0 - 5.5 knots in calm seas and certainly less in a heavy current or head sea/wind. While it would be nice to have a larger power plant, it is not a real problem unless you live in an area where you have heavy currents or tides. Get the CD 27 ...you'll love it.

The headroom down the center of the main salon is probably just about 6'or a little under. I am about 5'11 and can stand without touching along center line of boat but have to bend a bit off axis and certainly forward into the head and v-birth area.

The CD27 sails reasonably well in light air with a full genoa. She is not the fastest boat out there but there are many other advantages. My original sea trial was in about 4kts of breeze and the boat sailed along at about 2.5 knts which I thought was quite good for the conditions.

I looked at both the 27 and the 28 before settling on the 28. More interior space was the key for us. But... I've not heard any complaints from the CD27 owners... either one is a great boat.

I had the same concerns before I purchased my CD27,I have owned her for 15 months and love her.Only once have I not had enough power to make headway, that was motoring into a 30 knot wind and against a 3 knot current.
You won't set any speed records motoring, but I have come to love my little Yanmar diesel engine as well.It is efficent ,economical, dependable and runs like a sewing machine.
The CD27 is an excelent boat,I don't think you will be disapointed.
Good Luck and I hoe you make the right decision for you,I know I did.

We agree with what others have said. The little engine is fine for ordinary cruising, and it will push you (slowly) into some rather nasty stuff when that's needed. The 27 is a sweet boat.
