Hi all,
I need to change the port name for Allia this year and the name painting itself could use some work. THere is a local painter that comes highly recommended, but I was wondering about other options.

I had excellent results by designing the name on my computer and taking a printout to a local sign shop to have vinyl lettering made up. I think the whole thing, name and hailing port, cost me less than $40 and looks as good as any classic hand-painted job I've seen. I'm in the graphic arts and am kinda fussy about things like typography so I had to pay a little more for some "tweaking". A friend had his done with no tweak for about $20. The material is very thin -- looks just like paint.

Find a small independent shop that does vinyl lettering
and isn't too busy.
You can sit beside the artist while they show you
different sizes, fonts, italic/regular, colors etc
Make sure you know the exact max width and height
you have on the transome.

The hard part is getting the old painted name off. I bought a boat named "Island Princess", it took alot of acetone and elbow grease to remove the painted name. I have used local sign shops for vinyl names and they will work with you to get a good looking name in any color & style you want.eric wrote: Hi all,

I have the same problem. I used vinyl on another boat and it was easy to apply and looks great. No steady hand from an unstable platform is required. The entire line is cut from one sheet and it goes on aligned and properly spaced.
Somewhere, either here or on the Island Packet board, I read that the non-toxic spray oven cleaner will remove lettering paint and not the gel coat. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, and wipe it off. Sounds much too easy. I am going to experiment first, I recommend you do the same.

Been there, done that
Changed the name on my recently bought CD36 last summer. Used EZ Off
oven cleaner, and it ate through two different colors like a charm.
The only pointer I have is work a little bit at a time, one letter or
even half a letter and wipe the melted paint INWARDS not outside the borders. Use small clean, WHITE rags and discard after each wipe. After spraying the oven cleaner, the paint will start bubbling and begin to run. Before it starts running down below the letter, perhaps in a minute or two, wipe it off. I mean kind of scrape it off with the rag. The EZ-Off will leave a brown stain which you can get out with some rubbing compound mixed with a little pure alcohol. There will be a shadow remaining when you are done which you shouldn't worry about. What the new vinal lettering doesn't cover the sun will fade equally.

A local sign painter took care of all this for me. Only $149.50. The only thing I had to do was choose from a selection of schetches she did for me. And write the check. Of course "Less Marine" charges about that much money for their stuff too, and you still have to put them on.

My sign guys quoted $25-$30 for ten letters on stock vinyl (3"-4" tall). Installation is simple - they even let me do it. You should be able to get a similar price at any sign shop - a little more if you want a fancy font, curved layout, etc. A shadow effect will double the cost (twice as much vinyl and more layout time).
I'm always in favor of supporting local artists, but if the name of the home port is plain block lettering, vinyl is much more cost effective.

Removed the old name on my CD27 with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper. Use with lots of water and the old name "floats" off. Was very pleased with the prep for the new name which I had painted on. I personally opted for the traditional hand painted approach, and the "work in progress pictures" that I took of the whole job adds nicely to JOHNNY G's scrap book.

I took the old name and hailing port (painted) off with a wet rag and rubbing compound. The blue from the name ended up in the rag, which I keep on board... important if you are changing the name!
The new name and port went on in vinyl... I picked a font I liked on the computer, printed it big and left it on the fridge until I was sure. Then had a graphics place do it up in solid dark blue. Cheap and effective, and on its third season with fading or other problem.
