HI to all old friends on this board and to future new ones

Post by Mike Johnson »

Been a while since I have been on this forum. I sold my 25 and purchased a Friendship Sloop about two years ago. Since then, life has gone on and now the wheel comes full circle. I am selling the friendship sloop again and considering a typhoon for my next sail boat. I look forward to striking up conversations with you all

Hello Mike:

Yes, welcome back. Good wishes looking for a Cape Dory Ty Weekender.

If I recall correctly, you were connected with a member of the board named "Didereaux" (sp :?: ). He used to post regularly and was a lot of fun to read. I think he had an accident with his Cape Dory and it was possibly "totaled". I have not seen any posts from Didereaux in a long time.

Do you have any current knowledge about Didereaux :?:

Didereaux

Post by Mike Johnson »

Hi,

Yes, when I was last on the board, I was involved in collecting funds to get him back on the water. He lost his boat in a sailing accident on the rocks. This forum and its members were very generous . At the time, I was selling books on Amazon and the porceeds of that sale, and the donations from many members here raised a couple of thousand dollars towards his get back into sailing.

I received one note in a package from him since then. He made me a nautical knotted wine bottle with a candle for our efforts. It is proudly displayed on my table in my boat. I do not have any more inforamtion though I have to admit that I was looking forward to meeting him back here on the forum. I am sorry to have lost contact with him and those I had made friendships here. It saddens me that he is not active here.

During our summer cruise - as we were approaching a harbor at night - my dad and I got to talking about ol' Didereaux and wondering if anyone on here ever met the gent in person? Saw his boat? Read about his accident (other than his report)? I'm surprised that a generous donation of "a couple of thousand dollars" wasn't enough to keep him a loyal CDer.

Just curious.

Weicome back!
Friendship sloops are lovely, but CDs are a lot easier to sail and maintain.
I, too, remember "Didereaux," whose name, I think, was Phillips, which doesn't preclude him from being a Cajun. I contributed a few bucks to the fund, and always wondered what happened to the ol' boy.
Anyways, welcome back.

Hi Mike,

It' good to hear from you again. Welcome back.

I'm not sure what Didereaux's last name was. What Joe did remind me of was that many years ago we had a contributor whose name was John Phillips. He owned the Twin Oaks Marina located in Nebraska (I think).

There are a lot of knowledgeable CD owners who used to be regular posters that haven't been heard from in recent years. A few of them that I miss are John R from Florida's Gulf Coast, Tom "Cambria" from California and Mike "Compinche" from Centerport, LI, NY. And there are many more.

It is guys and gals like these that made the CDSOA the great forum that it is now.

The best to all.

We havnt heard much from John Vigor or Carter Brey in recent times either (I know Carter got a Sabre, but her remained active here for some time after).

Whatever happened to Winthrop Fisher? Used to go on about sailing typhoons across the pacific.

OJ and Joe,

Sorry guys, but I dredged this one up from '09. Nothing new here except my query about Didereaux.

Will teach me to look at dates! Not the first time I have replied to a post for several years back....
